Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Melissa Rife
As the snow falls, five little penguins go outside to play and head out to the frozen lake to go skating. One by one, they hurt themselves by falling in the sea, banging their bills, and breaking the ice beneath them. After each injury, their mother has to call the doctor to find out how to cure her baby penguins. And each time, they are met with the response, "No more penguins skating all around." Set to the rhythm of the popular rhyme "No more monkeys jumping on the bed", this book develops a singsong rhythm. The only problem is that the rhyme scheme from the song does not work well in this book. Whereas the original rhymes "And the doctor said" with "Jumping on the bed", this book tries to rhyme the line before the "And the doctor said" with "No more penguins skating all around." In trying to read it with its original rhythm, the reader is thrown off because of the awkwardness of this change. Although it was a good concept, the execution just was not what it should have been. However, the illustrations are very cute and provide a lot for small children to look at. The book is also good for beginning readers who do not know about the original song, as they may be able to read it without anticipating the pattern that should be there. Reviewer: Melissa Rife

    I Also Recommend:

    A little tough to read

If your children are familiar with the "Five Little Monkeys" story, this will be a little tough for them to understand. While the story itself it cute and the penguins even cuter, the rhythm and rhyming are really tough to follow. My children were not really interested in reading it more than once.
