Overview

We live in a time of vast changes that calls for new ways of thinking and new ways of training leaders. The minds of leaders and all learners must be fashioned and stretched in ways that have not been crucial or not as crucial until now. Gardner describes the "five minds", that is, modes of thinking, that will be at a premium in the future: The Disciplinary Mind: Mastery of the major schools of thought that human beings have created science, mathematics, technology, history, philosophy, and literature. The Synthesizing Mind: Mastery of interdisciplinary thinking; the ability to summarize diffuse ideas into a coherent and productive whole. The Creating Mind: An ability to go beyond disciplinary thinking and interdisciplinary synthesis to uncover new problems, questions, and phenomena. The Respectful Mind: An awareness of and tolerance for difference, but even more so, an ability to value difference and to work collaboratively with different kinds of people. The Ethical Mind: A concern for society over self-interests; the desire to create a world marked by integrity and care for others. After a short introduction, Gardner writes a chapter on each of these modes of thinking with rich examples to illustrate their importance and what steps can be taken to put these modes into practice. He concludes with a final chapter on the risks, rewards, and implications of his recommendations.

Editorial Reviews

BusinessWeek
. . . a detailed and thoughtful description of the multifaceted brains that are likely to be most valued in the coming decades.
Publishers Weekly

Psychologist, author and Harvard professor Gardner (Multiple Intelligences: New Horizons) has put together a thought-provoking, visionary attempt to delineate the kinds of mental abilities ("minds") that will be critical to success in a 21st-century landscape of accelerating change and information overload. Gardner's five minds-disciplined, synthesizing, creating, respectful and ethical-are not personality types, but ways of thinking available to anyone who invests the time and effort to cultivate them: "how we shoulduse our minds." In presenting his "values enterprise," Gardner uses a variety of explanatory models, from developmental psychology to group dynamics, demonstrating their utility not just for individual development, but for tangible success in a full range of human endeavors, including education, business, science, art, politics and engineering. This is a tall order for a single work, yet Gardner avoids overly technical arguments as well as breezy generalizations, putting to fine use his 20 years' experience as a cognitive science researcher, author and educator, and proving his world-class reputation well earned. Though specialists might wish Gardner had dug a bit more into the research, most readers will find the book lively and engaging, like the fascinating lectures of a seasoned, beloved prof. (Apr.)
