Overview

The Five Pearls belongs on the bookshelf next to The Outsiders, Holes, Catcher in the Rye, and To Sir With Love.
A perfect read for teenagers and parents alike. Barry James Hickey's engagingly cinematic writing will make you laugh, cry and ponder. No child left behind in today's American education system? There are five this time. Hickey has created a truly memorable story with distinct characters carved from everyday life where everyone has a secret.
With the help of a retired nurse, a dying man with a new identity, a terrible past and a hidden agenda changes the hearts, minds, and character of The Tadpoles; five angry, stubborn students forced into an after-school program. Barry James Hickey's world of disconnected quirky characters destroys the myth of the American melting pot and turns it into a salad bowl of mixed races growing up together with surprising and uplifting results. The Five Pearls leaves you begging for the story not to end.

Editorial Reviews

Guy Tower
A bright book on hope and caring. Barry Hickey creates characters no one would, at first sight, sympathize with: a guy leaving jail after 15 years? A bunch of immature teenagers dropping out? A sarcastic school principal? An old lady living in an old house? The author then imbues his characters with a magic formula, using acute observation of the human condition, sensitivity, honesty, imagination, love and hope. The result ia awonderful story, with timely revelations.

I like a book that gets my interest from the beginning. The Five Pearls was a great find and such great character development. I felt like I knew the main characters in the story right away. The tragic event at the end of one chapter was emotional and yet I had to put it down for another read. Didn't want to finish it too fast and have it all be over.

Wow! What a literal treat this book was! After reading the first chapter I finished the book within 24 hours. It spoke loudly to me about a number of things, Booze, Prison, Love, Growing up and Growing Old, Dying and Living Life. Amazing what one person can do to change not only their own but others lives. Bravo! Very well done!!

This year's MUST READ novel. Emotional, compelling and strikes at the heart of the human experience. Flawed characters are flawlessly portrayed by novelist Barry Hickey in this gripping drama. Highly recommended.
Carol Parrish
An exciting new author. I could not put it down. Always one more chapter to read. The characters and storyline were great. Can't wait to read his next novel.

Meet the Author

Barry James Hickey has lived a fascinating and diverse life. His stratified career has taken him to such exotic places as India, the North Pole, Turkey, Greece, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines. His travels have afforded him chance meetings with lepers, drug lords and world adventurers.
Hickey grew up on the South Side of Chicago. At the age of twenty-three, he rejoined his parents and siblings in Colorado. As a young man he was known to disappear for weeks at a time, hitchhiking across the United States, Mexico or Canada.
He worked his way through two high schools and five universities as a gas station attendant, elevator operator, hotel desk clerk, bridge painter, steelworker, canoe guide, newspaper editor, disc jockey, lumberjack and singer.
Moving to Hollywood in the mid-eighties, Hickey starred in several "B" films as well as appearing on episodic television. His last few years in Hollywood, Hickey turned to writing and producing independent films, also working for Walt Disney Studios and CBS Television as an executive assistant to presidents and vice-presidents in legal, programming, casting, development, story departments and studio operations.
Hickey returned to Colorado in 1999, worked for an architect, taught high school and learned all facets of the car business. He has several new novels and screenplays in the pipeline and continues to act and sing.

    Good story line and entertaining

I like a book that gets my interest from the beginning. I also like to read books that are easy to read because it is for my pleasure time and relaxation. This books was a great find and such great character development. I felt like I knew the main characters in the story right away. When is the movie coming out? Hope they do it justice. It will be great!

Nice to have the location being close to my home in Colorado too. What a nice surprise that was. The tragic event at the end of one chapter was emotional and yet I had to put it down for another read. Didn't want to finish it too fast and have it all be over.

THE FIVE PEARLS by Barry Hickey is an extraordinary tale woven from the fabric of commonplace American adults and teens trapped in mediocrity until an extradordinary man with a private vision restores their faith in themselves.

Barry Hickey has created a new volume that belongs in the American mainstream as a novel to be reckoned with. He takes unsurly characters and unravels them for the reader as unseen circumstances arise and take their toll. One by one, small lives are changed forever and the reader discovers who these characters are and what they are really about. An empathetic tale of adult grief for things never to be had again. And a telling story of what some determined brittle teenagers can accomplish if they take hold of their own destiny. A real pay-it-forward book as enthralling and engaging as To Kill A Mockingbird and The Outsiders. A must-read for every parent and every high school student. Best of all, the reader must resolve a fantastic moral issue on their own. An engaging novel sure to be talked about in the coming decades.

A compelling story from beginning to end....

Wow! This book was so good I could not put it down and certainly did not want it to end. The characters were so emotionally damaged that you wanted to jump into the book and take each one into your arms. The reader is made painfully aware of the consequences of each characters actions and cheers them on towards a new beginning.
