Gr 6 Up-Written by coaches, these titles are good additions to any sports collection. They give advice on how to succeed in the game, regardless of gender. In each book, six professional female athletes are featured, highlighting the players' specific abilities and offering drills for readers to work on. For example, in Big Plays, Nykesha Sales felt her greatest weakness was her "in-between game." The drill included in the chapter focuses on improving a player's ability to shoot off the glass. One of the drills in the chapter on Ukari Figgs in Shooting is to improve a player's ability to pass the ball to an open teammate. Drills are explained and charts and graphs help readers understand the logistics of the maneuvers. Someone unfamiliar with the game might have a hard time following the diagrams of the movements and repetition of the exercises as they are explained. An appendix in Big Plays explains a workout method called plyometrics, which is a combination of speed and strength training. In Shooting, advice on how to create a year-round workout program is appended.-Julie Webb, Shelby County High School, Shelbyville, KY Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
