Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
"Tadpoles" is the name given to this series of early readers which kids can read on their own or with adult assistance. Tips are provided to help enrich the reading experience and make it fun. The fifth point listed is one often overlooked—"Give praise! Children learn best in a positive environment." In each title of the series, on the verso of the title page, there is a photograph or drawing of the author and illustrator with a comment from each. The lesson is counting down from five. A quintet of teddy bears set out for a picnic in the woods and one by one they are drawn away. Finally one bear does reach the picnic where there is plenty of food spread out—most of it guaranteed to give a sugar rush, including the cake that this bear brought. Somehow all the bears manage to reassemble in time for the feast. Extra bonus lessons can be taught by naming the colors of each door of the five teddies' houses. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
