Overview

Recent political, economic, and ecological disasters have brought drastic changes to Sudan, the largest country in Africa, and to the lives of Sudanese women. As their husbands leave to work abroad, Sudanese women are assuming new responsibilities and are becoming more independent. This study examines the evolving transformation in Sudanese society, focusing on five women from the town of Sennar in Blue Nile Province. As they discuss their families, aspirations, work, and social lives, their accounts provide insight into contemporary life in a major developing country and the changing role of women within its society.
