Larry James walked into GITMO as a professional, he came out the same way. His expertise took him to Iraq where the US Army. There he lead the overhaul of the prison system with leadership and humility.
Soldiers, many of whom were teenagers just out of high school, were aided by soldiers old enough to be their grand parents in tasks no previous generation of professional medical or military had ever been tasked.
Teenagers in Iraq, some even preteens, were pressed into service to kill all who were not ISLAMIC. They were sexually and psychologically abused into fighting anyone who was not ISLAMIC.
In other wars America has been in, the soldiers on other side wanted to kill GI'S. In this war, they want to kill the American soldiers, the soldiers wives, the children of America, and were joyful as they committed suicide in heretofore civilian areas. As they are illiterate they are told - taught- of the harshness of the KORAN, not of its loving sides, thus producing a new sort of war and warrior.
Leadership from the top was missing at Abu Graib, causing American soldiers with the best of intentions to be off track and off tasked. 8 of these were court-martialed and some imprisoned, yet over 2000 others did their duty with quiet dignity and professionalism. Colonel James looked for the elusive of "WHY".
His story does not end with him leaving Iraq flying back to LAND of the BIG BX, but rather he takes you into his adjustment of a combat soldier decompressing in a more sane and social world where innocent items of PEPSI cans beside a road are not IED's but is just trash. Where a granddaughters cry in joy is no reason to forget himself and yell at her.
Colonel James was harassed and chastised by some in the military as well as some in the 'peace movement'. A strange coalition of allies as neither appreciated his talents or his dedication. Each were wrong in their way.
This is not a "PRO War" or "ANTI WAR" book. It's a book all Americans should read to get to know their country, their military and their terrorist opponents.
