Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
Part of the "Science Crackers" series, these colorful and informative books give an accurate and entertaining introduction to several science disciplines, as well as providing hands-on experiments. In this particular book, Parker starts with machines. He suggests you have a cold drink on a hot day, but it is hard to open. "A bottle-opener is a type of machine, called a lever. It lets you move something using a big force, but only a small way. Another simple machine is the wheel. You can roll a heavy load on it without too much effort." After introducing all of the simple machines, Parker moves on to gravity and friction, then changes directions and looks at light, sound, electricity and magnets. It is a somewhat scattered, but interesting introduction to the many facets of physics. The book is filled with pictures, yet it doesn't feel too busy. Experiments include playing with friction, creating rainbows, and building musical instruments. Backmatter includes a glossary, index and short list of further information. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen
