Overview

With Flash 4 Magic, New Riders re-introduces the best-selling Magic series, redefined and redesigned for the working professional and the serious student of CG.

The first Flash book not written exclusively for beginners and intermediate users, Flash 4 Magic is all about inspiration and quick solutions. The format is simple: A brief contextualizing description of a Flash technique or effect, the steps on creating the effect (including code and plenty of graphics), and a wrap-up on extrapolating the effect for other purposes, modifying the effect, and other relevant yet tangential info you can use later.

Flash 4 Magic is designed to keep you coming back for ideas and for alternative implementation options as you tackle your own projects. The authoring/development team for this book brings a wide variety of creative input, vital for providing inspirational breadth on top of technical depth to the content, and you will see that these artists are doing some of the most amazing Flash work on the Web today. They've each taken time out of their schedules to show some of their best stuff in this book, but the kicker is that it's not just for show. The idea is to let you try the material out for yourself (check the CD!) and take it in your own direction.

There's no other Flash book doing this, and no other series designed to bring developmental technique and artistic inspiration to the computer graphics audience at this level and in quite this style.

About the Authors:

David Emberton is a Web developer, writer, and columnist. He's also the editor of FlashZone.com and the producer of Flash-Challenge.com and ShockFusion.com. David also writes "Flash Point," a regular column on C|Net's Builder.com. His other interests include Web surfing and Flash.

J. Scott Hamlin is the director of Eyeland Studio, a Web entertainment company and content provider for clients such as Sun Microsystems, Nabisco, and MTV Europe. Scott is the author of several books, including Effective Web Animation (Addison Wesley Longman) and is a regular contributor to numerous periodicals in the Web and multimedia fields, including AV Video and Multimedia Producer magazine and Web Technique Magazine.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This is the best Flash book on the market. It offers step-by-step instructions on 21 interactive Flash projects: lava lamps, jukeboxes, e-commerce (product catalogs, shopping carts), guestbooks, games, games, and more games. The CD-ROM includes demos of Flash 4, source code, and other third-party software. However, this is not for beginners; readers should be familiar with the software. Intermediate and advanced web designers will be inspired by the authors' considerations of Flash's aesthetic and technical potential. Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.\

    Great book...

Great book for people who want to learn flash, it includes great lessons but not from scartch. A cd is included with ready made templates for thoses complex sites.

    Used copy for sale

Having struggled through 3 projects about 5 times in the book. I have gotten only one of them figured out. For example, in Project 2 they forgot to tell you to put a Stop action in the first frame. The other two, I'm still trying to figure what's been left out of the book. Using this book requires lots of patience and more time than necessary to get things done. Also the editor of the book needs to learn spellcheck.

Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time

The premise behind this book is a good one. A set of tutorials (aimed at users familiar with Flash) simulating situations you will probably run into when programming in Flash 4. But, it falls short. When discussing the most important part of each tutorial (the ActionScripts), the book gives you a 30,000 ft. view of what is going on . . with no explaination of the more complicated code. When working on the ActionScripts, just close your eyes and hope you make it thru! I would like to see just a bit more explaination for us 'non-code' junkies.

Great resource once you learn to use Flash's interface!

As a Flash instructor, I recommend this book to my beginning classes--AFTER they have had instruction using the program. Previous reviewers are right--this is no place for a beginner to start. But once you've had it with the Flash books that teach you how to draw circles and squares, get this one to teach you how to really use ActionScripts to create practical functionality (and the book does explain what the ActionScripts are doing and why; you just have to pay attention).

    Great Examples short on explanations

The authors have presented some terrific examples of the potential of Flash 4. The problem is that most of the tutorials included in the book fall short on descriptive explanations of what the Action Scripts mean and how they make the movies work. There are a lot of blunders, typos and errors in the books instructions which are very frustrating. Being an intermediate Flash user has allowed me to identify these snafus and avoid them. This book is not recommended for the beginner!

This book teaches the reader nothing!!

I bought this book having high expectations. I realized after browsing through the book that it teaches absolutely nothing. The book gives you the Fla and walks you through the steps but doesn't explain how and why the projects work. Users need a book that explains the lessons and this book isn't the one.

    Good Reference Book

I 'thought' I was a somewhat advanced Flash user, but I knew that I knew little about the hidden 'power' of Flash. This book touches on a lot of that underlying power, but I felt that several of the projects within the book were not explained well enough. For example, I would be directed to input all kinds of actionscripts, and the description of what it did was not satisfactory. I can logically figure a lot of it out, but trying to remember it for future use... is a bit over my head. I would say that this one will definitely be a permanent resident in my work-area so that I can refer to it from time to time, and I recommend it because it has a ton of stuff that I have not seen anywhere else. It is definitely NOT a beginners book like so many titles that are out there.

Good Book, but not for beginners!

I thought this book was great, but I bought it not knowing a thing about Flash. Althought I have now managed to learn it, this book is now a great tool! A must for Flash knowers!

    Ultimate tool for Flash 4

This is probably one of the best books I've seen on Flash 4's advanced features. Although, only from viewing an associate's copy of the book, there are many real world types of examples with stepped-out how-to. I'm buying my copy now. Another recommendation is 'Flash 4! Creative Web Animation' which explains the expressions and tell target aspects of Flash well. Of course, I'd prefer it if you didn't buy the book and let me keep a bigger share of the Flash development market to myself. If you want to join the movement, this is a great resource and self-teach tool.
