Editorial Reviews

NY Times Book Review
Record[s] much of the fury and folly of the 20th century and pays tribute to the intrepid photographers who showed up to record the spectacle.
VOYA - Jamie Hansen
The Associated Press is the world's foremost news organization. Its reporters and photographers have devoted their careers, and sometimes their lives, to providing the images and stories of events that have shaped the world. In this lavish history of the AP, readers can relive the events and achievements of the twentieth century. Reproduced here are the images etched into our collective memories, from the execution of a Viet Cong soldier to the destruction of the Berlin Wall to the bombing in Oklahoma City. A graceful and very personal essay by reporter Peter Amett, "Eyewitness to History," introduces four sections of more than 150 photographs entitled Leadership, Struggle, War, and Moments. Readers can see again the raising of the American flag at Iwo Jima and marvel at the crash of the zeppelin Hindenburg. Familiar faces are everywhere-Martin Luther King, Jr.; Frank Sinatra; Richard Nixon; Tiger Woods; Marilyn Monroe; and Adolf Hitler. Vietnam, the Civil Rights Movement, wars around the globe, and natural disasters are all covered in breathtaking and heart-wrenching visual images. The human side of history is especially evident in this book in the faces of refugees, movie stars, soldiers, athletes, and politicians. The editors have wisely allowed the images to speak for themselves and provide only simple captions and dates to identify persons and events. A Booklist Best Book nominee, this outstanding work will be eagerly pored over in all libraries. Attractively printed and produced, it is a bargain at the price. Index. Photos. VOYA Codes: 5Q 4P M J S (Hard to imagine it being any better written, Broad general YA appeal, Middle School-defined as grades 6 to 8, Junior High-defined as grades 7 to 9 and Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).
School Library Journal
YA-The editors at the Associated Press have dug deep into their files and compiled an impressive collection of many of the world's most memorable news photographs. Splendidly reproduced, blending both color and black and white throughout, these images provide an arresting history of the 20th century. There's no mind-numbing chronology here; these photos are displayed in sections on "Leadership," "Struggle," "War," and "Moments," often juxtaposing similar images of old and new, like those of Japanese refugees in 1946 and of Bosnia in 1992, reminding readers how much we have in common with those who came before us. Although some pictures of war and struggle are graphic, this is, after all, real life. And, as in real life, there is balance, too. An image on one page shows a Chechen victim of a Russian bomb, while on the next Chechen children play near their makeshift train-car home as if all were well. Political leaders from around the world are shown in pivotal and private moments of their careers. Sports heroes, from Babe Ruth to Michael Jordan, are captured in their glory. Beyond the photos, former AP war correspondent and Pulitzer Prize-winner Peter Arnett recounts his days of covering the world's hot spots from Vietnam to Bosnia. For readers more familiar with the letters MTV and PB&J, AP may not mean too much. However, this book, if only skimmed for five minutes, offers an enticing glimpse of some amazing photos.-Martin H. Simon, Photojournalist, Washington, DC
