If you thought you could never love a lecher, a liar, a cheat, a thief, a bully, a coward and an all around scoundrel rolled into one, think again. Sir Harry Flashman does it all in true Victorian swashbuckling style. The way Mr. Frasier combines some of the more well known events and people from the history books with one of the most unforgettable characters you¿ll ever hate to love (or love to hate, depending) is pure genius, not to mention laugh out loud funny. The best series I¿ve ever read.

The Flashman chronicles combine a superb understanding of Victorian History with a great sense of humor. This book, the first in the series, is a great start to all of them. The author does a great job in reliving true life events through the eyes of fictional character, not an easy task. I think the not-so-average mindset and character of Flashman adds to the fun.

Well written history with an added hero the likes of which are rarely seen in literature today! I have read them all and they are my favorite series of books! I only hope Mr. Fraser has a few unedited packets of Flashy's Memoirs to give us yet. Worth the time, and for the students of history, educational! Good job, Mr. Fraser!

There are any number of historical novels on the shelves. You read them and get a lesson in that period of history. The plots are serious and sometimes the characters are on the edge of the story. Flashman is different in that hardly notice the historical event but you learn. You have fun reading about this coward, adulterer, and cad as he tried to circumvent duty, honor and humanity to preserve his own life. But at the end of the day, you realize that you now know alot about the characters and events surrounding the British occupation of Kabul and the destruction of the British army there. It is a fun and educational read.

One of my favorites -- a swashbuckler of the first water, subtly and not-so-subtly spiced with historical detail, political commentary and acerbic wit. I can't imagine not wanting to read all the rest of the series, after you've read this one. It's not even the best of them!

Follow this soldier of empire through his victorian era exploits. It will educate and certainly entertain at the same time. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
