Chapter One

The Big Bulletin Board

Breakfast was ready.

"I will go wake the boys," Mrs. Lambchop said to her husband, George Lambchop. Just then their younger son, Arthur, called from the bedroom he shared with his brother, Stanley.

"Hey! Come and look! Hey!"

Mr. and Mrs. Lambchop were both very much in favor of politeness and careful speech. "Hay is for horses, Arthur, not people," Mr. Lambchop said as they entered the bedroom. "Try to remember that."

"Excuse me," Arthur said. "But look!"

He pointed to Stanley's bed. Across it lay the enormous bulletin board that Mr. Lambchop had given the boys a Christmas ago so that they could pin up pictures and messages and maps. It had fallen, during the night, on top of Stanley.

But Stanley was not hurt. In fact, he would still have been sleeping if he had not been woken by his brother's shout.

"What's going on here?" he called out cheerfully from beneath the enormous board.

Mr. and Mrs. Lambchop hurried to lift it from the bed.

"Heavens!" said Mrs. Lambchop.

"Gosh!" said Arthur. "Stanley's flat!"

"As a pancake," said Mr. Lambchop. "Darndest thing I've ever seen."

"Let's all have breakfast," Mrs. Lambchop said. "Then Stanley and I will go see Dr. Dan and hear what he has to say."

In his office, Dr. Dan examined Stanley allover.

"How do you feel?" he asked. "Does it hurt very much?"

"I felt sort of tickly for a while after I got up," Stanley Lambchop said, "but I feel fine now."

"Well, that's mostly how it is with these cases," said Dr. Dan.

"We'll just have to keep an eye on this young fellow," he said when he had finished the examination. "Sometimes we doctors, despite all our years of training and experience, can only marvel at how little we really know."

Mrs. Lambchop said she thought Stanley's clothes would have to be altered by the tailor now, so Dr. Dan told his nurse to take Stanley's measurements.

Mrs. Lambchop wrote them down.

Stanley was four feet tall, about a foot wide, and half an inch thick.

Stanley is a boy who certainly handles the unexpected. In the first book of this four-book collection, FLAT STANLEY, Stanley is suddenly flattened when a bulletin board lands on him. His worried parents take him to the doctor who says everything is fine. Instead of Stanley being discouraged by his situation, he discovers some perks that come with being flat. He's able to fly like a kite, go to California in an envelope, and even help catch thieves. However, being flat does get old. Luckily, Stanley's brother, Arthur, is able to help him out.

Stanley's life continues to be exciting, even as a round person again. In STANLEY IN SPACE, the President of the United States contacts Stanley and asks for Stanley's family to go into outer space. The Lambchop family travels to the planet Tyrra and meets the Tyrrans, who are very small indeed. The Tyrrans are having problems, but Stanley and his family know just how to help this distant civilization.

In INVISIBLE STANLEY, eating fruit during a storm proves to be just the combination to turn Stanley invisible. He's been flat, he's been to outer space, but invisible? That creates all new kinds of problems. And advantages. Stanley is able to help a stranger ride a bike, help his brother perform magic tricks, and help the police once again. However, when Stanley is tired of not being seen, he is lucky to have his brother help him out again.

When Stanley gets flat once more in STANLEY FLAT AGAIN, Arthur is not able to unflatten him. Stanley has entirely new sets of adventures his second time around as a flat boy. His flat body makes for a perfect sail and helps Mr. Jones to win a boat race. But when a little girl is trapped in the rubble of a collapsed building, Stanley, with his flat and flexible body seems to be the only hope for her rescue. Will Stanley be able to get to the girl? Will he be able to get her out without causing the building to collapse further?

Join Stanley and his family in their amazing adventures. Laugh along with Stanley as he enjoys the advantages of his differences rather than allowing them to limit him. Cheer for his courage as he bravely helps others. Imagine all of the things you could do if you were flat. Or invisible. Or in outer space. There are so many possibilities...

    Flat Stanley Collection

I have found the Flat Stanley series of books to be perfect to read to my 5 year old. He is just learning to read, so he cannot read them himself yet, but he enjoys listening to long stories. These are at a level that are entertaining to him and not too mature.

    Stories to pass on

I remember reading Flat Stanley when I was younger so when I saw the box set I had to purchase it for my step-son. He has not started the books yet but he did sleep with the box set the first night I gave it to him. This is a good book for boys since Stanley is flattened in the first book and goes through adventures in the mail. It's a fun set of stories that are a treasure to pass down.
