Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
The history of spices and herbs is the focus of this offering in the series "Plants We Eat." It continues, as its predecessors, to encompass a wealth of information going back about 10,000 years. For example, it is thought that people first discarded seeds from wild plants they ate onto a trash pile, and later happened to notice they grew! Little known facts most of us rarely think about, like how the spice trade impacted world history, are detailed. The book moves through history to discuss the individual plants that give us the most common of spices to the most exotic of herbs. The text is kept lively by the fascinating photographs. In addition, each chapter includes an insert entitled "To your health!" or "Dig In" which is a practical recipe that helps bring these sights, smells and tastes to life. This book won't be for everyone. But those of us who are lovers of flavor diversity will find it an entertaining addition to our kitchen bookshelf. 2000, Lerner Publications Company, Ages 12 up, $25.26. Reviewer: Kathleen Orosz
