Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In this outwardly glib paper-over-board catalogue of homeless dogs, Breathed (Edwurd Fudwupper Fibbed Big) comments on people's mistreatment of animals. Trouble is, Breathed's flippant satire and visual hyperbole make an odd fit with his devotion to a worthy cause-the book may be best suited to adult dog lovers. According to the introduction, Piddleton, Vt., "Pop. 327 (People: 243)," is home to activist Heidy Str delberg, who once named a "shivering three-legged streetdog" best in show at Westminster and then founded the Last Chance Dog Pound, to give "the doomed and most desperate... a final try at getting adopted into a world that worships perfection." But that's all in the fine print. To a casual browser, the book is a rogue's gallery of unlovely pets. Barney, a tattooed hound, sits sadly at the grave of his departed owner, "Leo `Nardo' Davinski, 1922-2003, Tattooer to the Angels Now." Pepe, a cross-eyed Chihuahua, thinks he's as handsome as Richard Gere. Other charmers are flatulent or stick their heads up their owner's nostrils. Every spread includes a full-page color portrait, opposite which is a black-and-white mug shot picturing the lonely animal in a gray cement cell. The sentimental concluding image, a glowing Pi ta holding a bandaged dog, laments that "Some live without love.../ That's how they're flawed." Despite this pro-adoption plea, none of the unfortunates finds a home, and the vaunted Piddleton shelter (if indeed it is the one pictured) looks as lifeless as a tomb. All ages. (Oct.) From The Critics
The Pulitzer-prize-winning creator of the Bloom County and Outland comic strips has teamed up with the Humane Society of the United States to address the problem of pet over-population and to encourage people to adopt pets from their local animal shelters. All the dogs in this book are leftovers in a fictional animal shelter in Piddleton, Vermont, which has a population of 327, of which 243 are people! Each dog has a very definite flaw, ranging from simple ugliness to elaborate tattoos to strange and sometimes disgusting habits. The last page of the book makes it clear that, even though dogs and people are imperfect, the greatest flaw is to live without love. The illustrations are hilarious, and the pithy, humorous rhymes accompanying each of the flawed dogs add to the charm of the book. This book is recommended as a consciousness-raising exercise for older children as well as for adults. Most of all, it is simply fun! 2003, Little, Brown and Company, Ages 10 up.

My son and I read this book together.

Parts of the story were very sad, and other parts were laugh-out-loud funny. Overall, it was a sweet story that we enjoyed together.

    Do not read!

I wish I had not read this book. It caught my eye because I'm a dog lover and it looked funny, it also said it was funny...it was not. In fact it was depressing. I was really disappointed in the fact that dog fighting was presented in a young reader's book at all, and the fact that the author alomost made you feel sorry for the man responsible for it was very distateful. Do not reccomend for anyone.

    more from this reviewer

    Love it! Love it!

Did I mention that I love this book? It makes me want to run right out and adopt a rescue dachshund. Sam is a specially bred dachshund who crosses paths with a displaced young girl, Hiedi. The two form a special bond, but a second, jealous pooch in the house finds a way to frame Sam for a crime he didn't commit. Sam's life takes a dramatic change for the worse, barely surviving the pound, test labs, and dog fighting rings. Then one day Sam plots his revenge against the poodle who changed his life. With the help of other flawed dogs, they plot a "shock and awe" campaign at the grandest of all dog shows - Westminster! The graphics are top of the line Berkeley Breathed - a unique style I would recognize anywhere!

    I Also Recommend:

    One of my favorite books!

This book is one of my favorite books because it had all of the things I was looking for, adventure, creativity, happiness and a little bit of sadness to top it off. I love dogs so i really loved this book as you could probably tell. Good is in the details of this book and that is why I give this book four stars.

    becoming a hero

This little book tells a little story about how one person can be moved to see the beauty of even the most challenging of gifts. In the end each of us is just a flawed dog who needs to be accepted just as we are.

    I don't reccomend this book

I strongly disliked this book. I might even say hated. When I saw this book at the book store I thought that it would be really funny. It wasn't. It was actually the complete opposite. It was super sad. Just for the people reding this review to know how sad it was I'm just saying that I had to stop reading it half way in the middle because it was so sad. I'm not joking and I've read some pretty sad books in my life.

Gives a different view of animals in need of help

It isn't what i thought it was going to be about when purchased, but i was glad to find that it helped find homes for animals in another part of the country, i work as an Animal Control Officer and try to find a variety of things that are about animals, this was very intriguing to me and well worth it's price.
