Overview

Naota's life isn't simple: he lives with his eccentric father and grandfather in a two-story house above a family-owned bakery in a town marked by a gigantic factory at its heart. The factory looks suspiciously like a hand iron, replete with a steam release at the top -- not the most typical landmark. Life is already strange enough, but to top it off, his older brother's ex-girlfriend starts making extremely suggestive passes at him ... and an impish, playful alien smacks him in the head with a bass guitar and ...

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This two-book set, based on the popular "FLCL" anime series created by the anime studio Gainax (Neon Genesis Evangelion), takes a strange story, compresses and totally rewrites it, and makes it even stranger. Thirteen-year-old Naota is run over one day by an alien woman riding a Vespa scooter. The woman, Haruko, then proceeds to whack him with a bass guitar, whereupon various things begin to spring from his head, starting with a robot with a television screen for a face. In this volume, the chain of non sequiturs continues, as Naota's friend Ninamori grows a flying robot out of her head and a monumental giant emerges from the ground and threatens the town. Stylistically, this series is the Japanese equivalent of an experimental American alternative comic. The artwork is sketchy and jagged and sometimes simple or twisted. The storytelling is deliberately fragmented and obscure, and the overall effect is surreal in the extreme. Does Naota really kill his father? It's hard to say. Readers who have not seen the anime will be hard pressed to interpret the books, but for libraries where the anime is very popular, this is recommended for mid-teen to adult fans. Freaky Follow-up!

Wow...wow. This is the final part to the FLCL manga. Check it out for some great laughs and some answered questions. This one is COMPLETELY different from the animé. Enjoy.
