“The Cast duo has done it again! These ladies appear to be an unstoppable force within the world of YA literature… Teenage readers will be drawn to Zoey's everyday, angst-riddled life. These stories are surreal, yet shockingly accurate when it comes to teenagers and their lives.” —TeensReadToo.com (5 stars) on Hunted

Children's Literature - Kristi Bernard
If you are a follower of vampyre lore you will love this book. If you want to convert over to the lifestyle of a vampyre, this informative handbook will help guide you. If you are following Cast's series "House of Night" this is the book that is being used by the students in the series. Young fledglings, or those who will become vampyre, are encouraged to learn the ways of the elders. Photographs show ancient symbols with brief descriptions of their purpose. Fledglings will learn firsthand their meanings and purpose for their new lives. Drawings by Doner bring to life a culture that has been in existence for many years. The vampyre way brings forth a reality when chapters describe how readers will feel going through the change to vampyre and what exactly will happen to them. Readers are encouraged to journal everything they are going through and Cast provides pages for just that throughout the chapters. Elements of air, water, fire, and earth set the standard listing days of the year in which readers were born. But if a fledgling changes to vampyre during the listed dates for Spirit Elementology then they will become a charismatic speaker, self-assured and highly intuitive to name a few characteristics. If you are interested in vampyre celebrations, Primoris Vampyra, Plurimos Diligo, Eostre and others, are listed in chronological order. Vampyre history is laid out in great detail. This history dates back to Mesopotamia around the ninth century B.C. via a High Priestess named Lilith. The final chapter has words of encouragement from fellow fledglings. Readers will enjoy this guide and become engulfed in the series. It's the beginning of a vampyre's journey. Reviewer: Kristi Bernard
VOYA - Heather Christensen
Cast and Doner expand the world created by Cast and her daughter in the popular House of Night (St. Martin's) series. Designed to mimic a student handbook, the book describes class symbols, curriculum, and other important information for first-year students. In Cast's world, vampyrism occurs at a genetic level in a small percentage of people and first becomes evident during puberty, when a teen is "marked" with a blue crescent moon on his or her forehead. The handbook details the biological changes that follow and provides detailed instructions on various ceremonies and rituals with which fledgling "vampyres" will need to become familiar. Short histories and quotations from famous vampyres (from Cleopatra to Shakespeare) offer inspiration to the newly marked. Throughout the book are places for the fledgling to respond and reflect on personal experiences during this time of great change. Fans of such books as Dragonology (Candlewick, 2003) and other faux nonfiction will have fun exploring this book. Doner includes artistic renditions of artifacts from various vampyre covens around the world, along with color photographs that document physical changes experienced by fledgling vampyres. Readers will find examples of different markings and their meanings, symbolic runes, and scenes from vampyre history. Give this to House of Night fans to enjoy while they are awaiting the next novel in the series. Reviewer: Heather Christensen

Ye who enter the House of Night will be welcomed as a new student and given The Fledgling Handbook 101 as a guide. Veteran vampires understand how difficult the conversion from sunlight to moonlight is. The guide provides the fledgling with an introduction to vampire life as an undead and the societal Maslow Hierarchy of surviving amidst the massive humans. There are treatises on vampire biology and history as the species traces its roots to Lilith. Included is a section on Nightkind Elementology, which is intended to help the newbie survive the terrors of the dark. A bit more experienced Fledglings like Zoey provides words of encouragement as they detail some of their adjustments. Finally a who's who like Sappho and Shekinah provide words of inspiration. Young adult fans of the series will appreciate the entertaining handbook enhanced by Ms. Doner's colorful drawings as the newcomers are guided on what to expect as their body changes in a puberty-like twist. As Shekinah says: "Within chaos lies opportunity"; not for everybody as this entertaining reference guide is a companion piece to the saga by providing Fledglings and readers with increased opportunity of understand the world as Cast and less chaos. I just completed book #6 and starting book #7. I have really enjoyed reading this series, the characters are real and you feel their passion for life. Looking forward to the next book. Even better than that "other" vampyre series.

Ever since Marked came out, I've wanted to know what Zoey Redbird's Fledgling Handbook looks like. As a matter of fact, anytime I read a book about someone going to a special school and getting their handbooks, I always wonder what they're like. I was a nerd in school, so I liked getting these guides and reading over the rules and regulations of my new school - and I liked it even more when they included the history. So, when I got the chance to read The Fledgling Handbook 101, I was over the moon. Though I have my own issues with some of the characters, I am a fan of the House of Night series. P.C. Cast does not fail me with this guide. With a gorgeous cover, thick pages and beautiful drawings, you'll get lost in the history and mythology behind not only the House of Night, but vampyre folklore as well. I also think the pages where you can add your own notes about your changing vampyre self is a cute little touch and makes it feel like a true school handbook. Over everything, my absolute favorite thing to it all is the vampyre history stories that include places and historical figures that we all know and are familiar with. I read through the book in less than an hour, then spent more time going through and studying the pictures and footnotes. With less than two hundred pages, it's an extremely easy read. The price seems a little steep for this guide, but it is a welcome addition to anyone's HoN collection.

I have read all 9 books! As soon as I get done reading the book, I immediately go to the next. P.C and Kristen Cast are an amazing mother-daughter team. They leave you wanting more when you finish one of the books. I HIGHLY recommend these books. They'll keep you wanting more and more!!

Okay, so every series has to have a guidebook, and fans were lucky enough that P.C. and Kristin included a book that was actually mentioned in the series! I'll admit I think the series is more interesting than the handbook, but I think Aphrodite and myself can agree, it's not our cup of tea. If you want to read this extra to the series you can, but if you don't want to read it, you don't need to to understand the series.
