At the start of this chilling fantasy from Berg (Daughter of Ancients), the first of a pair set in the land of Navronne, her rebellious hero, 27-year-old Valen, has been hiding from his pureblood family of sorcerers for 12 years. Valen, who's also struggling with a kind of drug addiction called "doulon sickness," possesses his grandfather's magical book, Maps of the Known World("Legend said it could lead men to the realm of angels"). The book is Valen's passport to sanctuary with the learned monks of Gillarine Abbey, who believe he can unlock its magic. After his family discovers him, Valen becomes resolved to learn the book's power. At stake is not only the protection of an innocent boy sheltered at the abbey from greedy princes vying for control of their dead father's kingdom but also the entire world's salvation. Like much fantasy marketed as "adult" today, this well-written novel is suitable for readers as young as middle-schoolers, though some preteens may find it a bit too dark and slow for their tastes. Superb storytelling, twisting plots, puzzles and mysteries, and an apocalyptic convergence made for an excellent and enjoyable read. If it weren't for the press of other book club selections, I would immediately proceed to the second half of this duology, Breath and Bone. Even though the story is told in the first person, by Valen, it flowed well. I struggled to connect with Valen, a fugitive from his family, constantly on the run and hiding for twelve long years. Magic is strictly registered and contracted among pureblood families and any offspring willful enough to escape the privilege are hunted down relentlessly. In Navronne, twelve years ago then fifteen years old Valen was abandoned by his companion Boreas to die (as predicted by the teen¿s mother). Instead he survived somewhat due to his 'doulon sickness' addiction, but vanished from his family of pureblood sorcerers renowned for their mapmaking foretelling skills. Before he was left to die he took with him his grandfather¿s most sacred tome, Maps of the Known World, that many believe can guide the right mage to the realm of angels if the key can be found to unlock its secrets.------------------- Valen lives in concealment amidst the Gillarine Abbey monks, who gave him sanctuary because of the volume he stole from his family they believe he will eventually interpret the book so they can use it to reach the angels¿ realm. However, as he struggles with his 'doulon sickness' addiction, his family and others have found his haven they are coming for Maps of the Known World.------------ FLESH AND SPIRIT is a terrific first entry in an apparent two book saga. This tale is a coming of age thriller as the beleaguered hero begins to understand what he possesses, the world converges on him. Everyone touched by magic, which means everyone, want Valen to use him as their guide to the Angels or to kill him to take possession of the tome. Readers will appreciate this terrific opening gamut, whose only flaw is waiting for the rest of the journey.--------------- Harriet Klausner
