Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristen Kelley
This book tells the story of three sisters who live in Sweden. Their mother makes them brand new dotted dresses and instructs them to keep them clean. The girls run out to play, taking care to protect their dresses. They meet an old woman carrying a heavy load of firewood and ask if they can help her. They end up spending the whole day doing chores for the old woman, who tells them to call her "Aunt Thelma." The girls milk the cow, feed the chickens, bring potatoes from the cellar, haul fresh water from the spring, and feed the pig. Then they enjoy fresh milk and cookies with Aunt Thelma. When it is time for them to go home, they realize they have gotten their new dresses all dirty. They are worried their mother will be mad, but she is not when she learns they have been helping someone in need. This is a great story about serving others, but be sure to remind your little ones to get parental permission before helping a stranger, even an old woman. The book contains several simple, full page color illustrations. Another excellent book in the "Flick, Ricka, Dicka" series. Reviewer: Kristen Kelley

A hit to read to little girls.

The entire Flicka, Ricka and Dicka series was a childhood memory I was delighted to find in print again. I read the library editions to my own three daughters when they were younger and now own a set to read to my eight granddaughters. You can sense how much it is enjoyed because when one of the granddaughters asked me to be the designated reader in her preschool, she absolutely wanted me to read this book. As I read it to her class, she sat there smiling from ear to ear, but more importantly I held the attention of all 20 classmates for the entire book. I like the fact that the adult in the story is called 'Aunt Helma' suggesting that the three little girls are helping someone they know well, rather than a stranger; but I still clarify the point while reading that this is a story that was written a long time ago and our safety rules today include asking your parent's permission before you help someone..... and all the little heads of the listeners shake up and down in agreement.
