Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
Books about Flicka, Ricka, and Dicka, the look-alike sisters from Sweden, were popular in the 1950's. Eight of those are being reissued. The text of this Christmas story is lengthy, filling one side of the double page, with a black outlined illustration on the other. The girls are delighted to receive ice skates for Christmas. They bring them, and their dog Mike, along on a visit to their Uncle Jon and Aunt Lisa. After enjoying some fun skating on a nearby lake, they are joined by a boy named Bertie. Unfortunately he begins to chase Mike and falls through the thin ice. By holding on to each other, the girls manage to pull Bertie out of the water and bring him to his house on his sled. There they and his mother soon warm him up. The next day Bertie brings thank you gifts to them, and even to Mike. Both the story and the illustrations reflect the books of long ago. The full-page ink and watercolor illustrations are detailed, naturalistic visualizations of the text that appear old fashioned to modern eyes. The girls in their identical cute red and white skating outfits appear in every scene, almost as posed. Bits of glitter scattered across the cover add to the overall quaint appearance.
