Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Justina Engebretson
It is amazing to realize how dramatically communicative technology has evolved since the Internet was developed and computers began appearing in homes. A little more than two decades ago, people were fascinated by the ability to send letters instantly to family and friends across the country—or even the world—via email. Then there was the development of chat rooms that allowed people to carry on real-time conversations over the Internet. From there, things continued to develop; before long, social networking was born. In this addition to the "STEM trailblazer BIOS" series, elementary students can learn about Caterina Fake, a cofounder of Flickr and one of the pioneers of social networking. The first chapter provides information on Fake's early childhood and education, briefly describing her introduction to the world of social networking. The second chapter explains how she met her husband and how the two worked together to develop the popular Flickr site. Chapters three and four provide a glimpse into the work Fake accomplished during her employment with Yahoo!, as well as her latest social networking site. Each chapter has a key focus and ends with a quote by Fake. A timeline of events is included at the end, which allows readers to quickly access key events in Fake's life. There is also a glossary and a list of other print and electronic resources, which readers can use to learn more about social networking and even create their own blog. Overall, older elementary students interested in technology and social networking will find this book to be an interesting jumpstart for further study. Reviewer: Justina Engebretson
Voya Reviews, April 2014 (Vol. 36, No. 1) - Johanna Nation-Vallee
Stem Trailblazer Bios is a six-volume series featuring recent innovators in the fields of science or technology. Each book provides a biography of the subject’s early life and education followed by a description of his or her career, inventions, and accomplishments. Caterina Fake is the founder of Flikr and an early developer and advocate of social media. Readers learn about Fake’s goal of creating spaces on the internet where people could share information to make their lives easier. Students should find the books in the STEM Trailblazer Bios series interesting and informative. These short books, written in a simple and straightforward style, will appeal most to middle school-aged readers and should find equal popularity among both males and females. (STEM Trailblazer Bios) Reviewer: Johanna Nation-Vallee; Ages 11 to 14.
