I couldn't get the update to work either. But I called Barnes & Noble customer support and Tony was very polite and helpful. Together we unregistered and registered my device. I recommend calling them to do it instead of doing it alone because if you run into an issue, they're right there to help out.
I'm happy to report that my game is working great again! The planes still move pretty slow, but the touch is much more responsive now. :)
