Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
In a book that seems destined to become a classic of early childhood literature, a series of animal mamas assists a series of animal babies to fly, swim, wiggle, slide, paddle, and creep. Each baby in turn spots a baby of a different kind, until finally the human baby appears with its mama, ready for a kiss—and rejoicing in the gathering of all the baby animals already celebrated. The book could hardly be more perfectly constructed. Root's rhyming text is a read-aloud delight: "‘Swim!' blurps the baby fish. ‘Deep down dim.' So the mama helps the baby fish/ splish splash swim." Walker's mama-baby pairings are wonderfully colorful and cheerful, each sharing a glimpse of the tail of the next animal in the sequence emerging on the page. The story builds appropriately to the joyous appearance of the human child, clamoring for a kiss: "So the mama and the baby child kiss like this." Child readers are bound to share in the baby child's triumphant closing cry, "Babies everywhere!" Prediction: this one is going to be read by thousands of mamas and babies for years to come. School Library Journal

Despite the subtitle, this book is not just for babies. It's a charming and entertaining easy reader as well. The acrylic illustrations are done in a pastel, springtime palette with soft edges that give the animals and their scenery a happy and safe feeling. The book opens with mother bird teaching her baby to fly "...in the blue, blue sky,/where the wind blows whish ./'Look!' cheeps the baby bird./'I see a.../FISH!'" The fish sees a baby snake, the snake sees an otter, and so on. At the end, a baby mouse spots a human child, and all of the youngsters gather around a pond as the toddler exclaims, "Babies everywhere!" This is a sweet book that has a rhythm reminiscent of "Over in the Meadow." The text flows easily from scene to scene, and as each baby is discovered, children can call out the rhyming name, which adds to the level of interaction.-Kate Neff, Alachua County Library, Gainesville, FL

Kirkus Reviews
An adorable assortment of baby animals flap, wiggle and splash their way through the forest, spotting each other in turn as they play with their mamas. Human babies and toddlers will love guessing which animal comes next as they follow clues from Root's contagious, rhyming text and Walker's bright and warm acrylic illustrations. Onomatopoeic verbs-"flip flap fly," "splish splash swim"-array themselves in playful swaths descending down the page, leading readers' eyes through the choreographed page turns, which piggyback on the rhyme scheme to prompt readers and listeners in the identification game. The cleverness of the design combines with the animals' toddler-friendly round shapes and smiles to provide a developmentally appropriate visual accompaniment to the well-paced text. This story begs to be enjoyed over and over again by both babies and their grown-ups, who will find themselves chanting it rather than reading it by the second time through. Despite its slightly smaller-than-average size, the large animals in uncluttered compositions will make this a hit for group as well as individual sharing. (Picture book. 1-5)

I have four children, ages 4, 3, 3, and 1, and they all adore this book. The rhythm of the book is great, and my four-year-old, in a few readings, could 'read' it, himself. My toddler, though, goes nuts over this book, and is now pointing to pictures, naming the animals, and asking for it by name. Beautiful illustrations and adorable story. A must-have!

I love the 'musicality' of the storyline in this book. Our 2 year old toddler loves identifying the animals and trying to work out which character is coming next. Because of her age we've had to cut down the amount we actually sing out loud as she gets impatient to turn the page - but that will change as she gets older. We've found this to be a great bedtime book and the pictures are gorgeous.

My little boy loves, loves, LOVES this vastly underrated book! This is the book he always picks. We frequently have to hide the book, because our son wants us to read it to him over and over again. The soft pastel illustrations are gorgeous. The sweet rhyme is all momma animals teaching their babies how to fly, swim, etc. I really like how the text points out different colors, too. Towards the end, a human momma kisses her son… and my son always kisses me! So sweet! :)

One of our most favorite books! It's so catchy that I know it by heart. Our favorite page is when the Mama kisses the baby child. My son turns to me anticipating the kisses coming his way every time. So sweet!

My son loves this book! I am so glad that I saw it in a store and picked it up. This is is favorite book and just me starting to recite the book gets his attention and he wants me to finish the story. It is such a sweet little book! I would love a similar version where Daddies help their little ones.

My 17 month old loves this book! He brings it to me daily to read. We have to read it at least 4 times each sitting. It's such a sweet and fun book that I don't mind the repition at all. I'm sometimes ready to read it again when he's ready for the next book. A definite must to add to your child's library.
