Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Lots of board books have tabs and wheels and others gimmicks to attract attention and help with learning. These "Flip-up" book are in that same genre, but they take the learning process a step further and can even turn it into a game. The illustrations are bright and bold, starting with a colorful jack-in-the box against a black background on page two. What shape do we see? Guess and then flip up the tab to see if you were right. Not only does the image of the shape appear, but the name of the shape that is associated with the object appears as well. The items are not unusual, so younger children will be able to recognize a toy boat, cookies, eggs, diamond, crescent, and the like, but they may not quite get the concept of selecting a specific shape from the picture, such as the boy with a sweater that has diamond shapes or the train crossing an arched bridge. The last tab, which shows on the back cover, reprises the shapes and also the name each shape. This book is certainly more challenging than its companion, entitled Flip-Up: Counting.
