Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 1-4-- Karla Kuskin's ``I am very fond of bugs/ I kiss them/ And I give them hugs'' unequivocally sets the mood of this delightful collection. Loaded with action poems full of humor, color, and creepy crawlies, the 20 selections will be fun to read alone or share. The natural movements and details of glowmorms, crickets, fireflies, snails, and ladybugs, to name a few, are wonderfully interpreted through expertly rendered, realistic colored-pencil illustrations. Children appear sporadically as they observe and playfully interact with the bugs. Most of the short poems are easy to read and are well placed on the page to balance the illustrations. The primer-sized print is in bold black ink. When read aloud, the poems are sure to create excitement. J. Patrick Lewis, Margaret Wise Brown, and Hopkins himself are a few of the poets included. More than half of the original sources of the selections are still in print. Hopkins's talent for good topical anthologies is once again confirmed in this appealing book.-- Jos N. Holman, Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library, OH
Quraysh Ali
A charming assortment of 20 easy-to-read creature features crawling with vitality and humor. Youngsters will find the book a dance for the senses, lending itself to a roll of the tongue or a perk of the ears. Hopkins nurtures an already infectious relationship between children and bugs with simple rhymes and logical sequencing. Lillian Fisher's "A Magic House" unveils nature's wonderment: "Someone's little silken house / is hanging by a thread. / A brown cocoon looks like a leaf / as shown in books I've read. / It swings among the poplar leaves, / I watch it and I giggle, / Because whatever is inside / makes me wiggle-waggle-wiggle." Danger lurks, and the call of the wild hides many uncertainties (a bumble-bee too close for comfort, ladybugs with agendas). All of these moments are revealed with passion and gentle concern by Lillian Moore, Margaret Wise Brown, and others. There's even an anecdote by Benjamin Franklin. Palagonia's colored pencil illustrations leap from the page, weaving a larger-than-life-size web of bright hues and friendly insects. His playful use of perspectives creates a rich, lush tapestry.
