Overview

Some bands make a big deal about getting back to their roots at one point or another, but like Wilco before them, this Philly ensemble have taken the opportunity to uproot their sound from the Americana grit that marked earlier discs like Kids in Philly. Float Away with the Friday Night Gods is an expansive, lush disc, rife with sonic trickery (like the loop-laden "People of the Underground") and fugue-state musings (which come to a head on the dramatic "For All We Know, We're Dreaming"). It's a little bit odd that the band decided to move away from the decidedly E Street flavoring of their previous material just in time for their collaboration with the Boss himself -- he provides guest vocals and guitar on "Float Away," a soaring pop tune that's reminiscent of the Verve at their peak. Brothers Serge and Dave Bielanko retain the thick-as-thieves harmonies of yore, particularly evident on "What 2 Bring," which should take the edge off any tension Marah diehards may feel about the band's newfound flamboyance.
