Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
Although most readers will expect this title to be about swimming, it is really about that and much more. Young readers will learn about buoyancy and displacement and they will be introduced to Archimedes, a Greek mathematician who, in 200 BC, made some significant discoveries about water and the objects that sink or float in water. Readers will see many simple experiments that they can do at home, with limited supervision, to help them understand these two theories. Color photographs will help students to see that understanding why some objects sink and some objects float can help them to understand the world of science around them. Although a difficult subject to teach young readers, this series does an admirable job using simple text and familiar situations. The series, "Buddy Books: First Science," includes 12 titles. This is an excellent choice for science classrooms in the early elementary grades, as well as an excellent first choice buy for media collections. Appendices include a simple index, recommended websites, and a vocabulary list for words listed in bold type throughout the text.
