Floating Dragon

( 9 )

Overview

Two monstrous evils.

This quiet suburban town of Hampstead is threatened by two horrors.

One is natural. The hideous, unstoppable creation of man's power gone mad.

The other is not natural at all. And it makes the first look like a child's play.

    The Scariest

This and Ghost Story set the bar for what is scary, look under your bed and sleep with the light on writing. This book is worth owning, cause you will want to read it more than once

I bought this book based on the raving reviews but for me, it was very hard to get into and follow. The story seemed to jump all over the place and I soon found myself totally confused at what I was reading.

    bizarre and chilling

I enjoyed the book overall. It was a little hard to get into though. The beginning felt very unfocused and there were so many characters and places that it was hard to keep things straight. Once the story got rolling though it was very interesting. There are scenes in this book that are very memorable and creepy. I really liked how the effects of the man-made virus were so various and unpredictable. It did different things to different people and that made the story entertaining. I especially liked the man who painted his whole house (including the windows and roof) hot pink. The effects on many of the other people weren't so benign. If you are up for a long tale of the mysterious, bizarre and chilling, that takes some concentration then I would recommend Floating Dragon.

    Peter Straub's Best

I've gotten into Peter Straub's work only just recently, and he is fast becoming one of my favorite fiction writers. He has an incredible gift; his novels (I've read Ghost Story, Mystery, Koko and The Throat so far) are so carefully and intricately assembled, and Floating Dragon is no exception. I loved the characters and the shifts in time, place and voice. This is not a "scary" book, it's a fantastic suspense story. I don't want to give the plot away, you have to read the book for the specifics (and you will not be disappointed!).

    Excellent Book!

I eagerly await Straub's new novels, and this one was definitely not a let down. A thrilling ride that had me riveted and left me afraid to close off the lights!

    Barb A true Straub fan

I am getting older now and my memory is sometimes sketchy. The bright spot in this problem is that I can read Straub's stories over and over and it always seems like the first time. WOW What a gift!

    The Straub Effect

A really great and imaginative book with horrific monsters, terrifying nightmares and characters destined for a twist of fate. I was awed by Straub's writing as he took me on a journey of terror.

    Read this and have nightmares!

This is one of the scarriest books I have ever read. Two horrors--one of the mundane world and one of the supernatural merge in a tale of spellbing terror that will leave you sleepless to finish it.
