On their major-label debut, Flood, They Might Be Giants exchange quirky artiness for unabashed geekiness and a more varied and polished musical attack. Although the album contains two of the group's finest singles in "Birdhouse in Your Soul" and "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)," the overall record is uneven, since the group's hooks aren't quite as sharp as before and the humor is either too geeky or leavened with awkward social statements like "Your Racist Friend." Even with its faults, Flood has a number of first-rate songs, and it's a strong addition to their catalog, even if it isn't as weirdly intoxicating as its predecessors.

at times this album can have me in tears from laughing so hard. at times you're not sure if they're serious or looney with songs like ''your racist friend''. Minimum Wage is a song that speaks volumes. Istanbul gets in your head and won't go away. (not that that's a bad thing!) it's a wonderful album that is great for cheering up a bad mood or for feeding a silly mood!

I first heard this album when at a camp in Wyoming. We didn't have our families, and a lot of us were starting to miss them horribly. Our counselors put this CD in and at first we were like "what...?" and made fun of it. After a while, we got them to take it out. The songs made us laugh so hard, though. On the 10 hour ride home, our van begged to hear it again. They laughed at us, and let us hear it again. We tryed-not availing-to follow the lyrics. I wanted this for myself, and I got it on Christmas. I spent a good two hours laughing at the lyrics. It has taken me so long to rave about how great it is because the Phantom of the Opera has been haunting me ever since January 22nd, and that was my life until recently. Trust me, Flood is the greatest CD ever created!!

Although I am not a fan of fad pop music, this album is hilarious, entertaining and the songs stick in your head. The music is very original as are the lyrics. My favorites are the Birdhouse in Your Soul and Istanbul. If you have a sense of humor, you will like this music.
