Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Emily Schuster
Presented by the Weather Channel, this book shines when it's telling the human stories behind floods, particularly in the excerpted diary entries of two young flood survivors. Some of the straight fact-relating is dry and begins to sound like a textbook. Fortunately, the science is solid and there is an interesting fact here and there to keep the book moving. A photo insert features dramatic pictures of floods and rescues, but does little to illustrate the concepts covered in the book. More photographs, and especially diagrams, are desperately needed. Without them, concepts such as the water cycle and ground saturation are hard to grasp. Some high points include a guide to flood safety, a hands-on science experiment, and a list of good weather websites (including Weather Channel sites, of course!) Unfortunately, the lack of explanatory art really takes away from the book as a whole.
