Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This user-friendly book from the "Our People" series brings Florence Nightingale to young readers in four chapters. As with other books in the series, the text covers Nightingale's life in a succinct manner utilizing short and well-organized chapters. Readers will discover how she rebelled against the stereotypical lifestyle expected for "well-to-do" females during her time period. In addition, information about the implementation of her mission work and nursing practices are covered. Sidebars pepper the text with "Interesting Fact." The entire book consists of only 32 pages with large print dictating that the material will not overwhelm readers. Readers will be able to glean much information about Nightingale for reports or general interest. Black and white photos from the time period accompany and enhance the text. Time line, glossary, and resource pages follow the main body or work. Because the format is so user-friendly, the book may span the gamut from third through eighth grade as indicated by the publisher. The reading level is for grade 4. 2004, The Child's World, Ages 8 to 14.
