After reading this special treat of a book, and looking again and again at Carol Highsmith¿s beautiful pictures, I can see why they call Florida ¿the Sunshine State.¿ The photographs are sunny and bright, and so¿s the writing, which is as breezy as a wisp off the Keys. Speaking of the Keys, I was impressed that Miss Highsmith and the writer, Mr. Landphair, took us from the Keys to the very tip of the Panhandle. I especially loved the shots of Ybor City, the old part of Tampa, and old woman still rolling cigars by hand. In the front of the book, alongside the well-written introduction, there¿s an old black-and-white photograph from Ybor City as well as other old shots to give the book some historical context. I¿d say this book will have staying power; that is, it is so well put together that it will be as attractive ten years from now as it is now. A good job done by all.
