HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

About the Review

The review chapters in this book are designed to help you sharpen the skills you need to approach the FTCE English 6-12 subject area exam. The exam consists of two parts: an essay and approximately 85 multiple-choice questions. Each of the seven competencies tested is examined in separate chapters. The skills required for all categories are extensively discussed to optimize your understanding of what the test covers.

Keep in mind that your schooling has taught you most of what you need to know to answer the questions on the test. The education classes you took should have provided you with the know-how to make important decisions about situations you will face as a teacher. Our review is designed to help you fit the information you have acquired into specific competency components. Studying your class notes and textbooks together with our category reviews will give you an excellent foundation for passing the exam.

About the REA Study Center
The best way to personalize your study plan is to get feedback on what you know and what you don’t know. At the online REA Study Center, we give you two full-length practice tests with detailed score reports that pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses. Before you review with the book, go to the REA Study Center and take Practice Test 1 as a diagnostic test. Armed with your score report, you can personalize your study plan. Review the parts of the book where you’re weakest and focus your study on the areas where you need the most review. After reviewing with the book, take Practice Test 2 at the REA Study Center to ensure that you have mastered the material and are ready for test day.

If you are studying and don’t have Internet access, you can take the printed tests in the book. These are the same practice tests offered at the REA Study Center, but without the added benefits of timed testing conditions and diagnostic score reports.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE TEST

What’s on the FTCE English 6-12 exam?
The FTCE English 6-12 exam is computer-based and tests 7 broad competency areas along with skills aligned to each competency. Below are the competencies used as the basis for the FTCE English 6-12 exam, as well as the percentage of the total test that each competency accounts for. These competencies represent the knowledge that teams of teachers, subject area specialists, and district-level educators have determined to be important for beginning teachers.

When Should the FTCE English 6-12 Exam Be Taken?
Florida law requires that teachers demonstrate mastery of basic skills, professional knowledge, and the content areas in which they are specializing. If you are currently a student, your college advisor will tell you about testing requirements. If you have graduated from a Florida state-approved teacher preparation program and made the decision to teach English in grades 6-12, you need to begin the process by applying for a Florida Temporary Certificate in that subject. The Bureau of Educator Certification will only evaluate your eligibility in the subjects you request on your application form. The Temporary Certificate is valid for three school years, allowing you to complete the certification tests while teaching full-time.

Florida accepts credit-approved teacher preparation programs from other states for initial certification, provided that:

• the program area is also a subject in which Florida offers certification, and

• the training was completed at the same degree level required in Florida for that subject.

The Temporary Certificate allows you to begin teaching full-time while you complete the certification exams for the Professional Certificate.

When Should I Register?
You may register on the internet at any time. There are no registration deadlines for the exam, but it is wise to register early for the session you desire, as test sites tend to fill up fast.

Is There a Registration Fee?
Yes, you must pay a registration fee at the time you register. Credit cards (Visa or Master Card), or debit cards which have the option to be used without the entry of a PIN, may be used. If you do not have a credit or debit card, call FTCE customer service at (886) 613-3281 for other payment options.

Scoring the FTCE English 6-12 Test
Your final scaled score will be based only on scorable items. Examinees are not penalized for wrong answers. Since you are not penalized for guessing, do not leave any question unanswered.

A question answered correctly is worth one raw point, and your total raw score is the number of questions answered correctly on the full test. All multiple-choice questions are designed to assess your knowledge of the categories and related skills mentioned above and reviewed in this book.

Answering the multiple-choice questions is straightforward. There is one essay and approximately 85 multiple-choice questions on the FTCE English 6-12 test. Each multiple-choice question contains four response options, A through D. You are given one and a half hours for the multiple-choice questions and one hour for the essay. Using our timed online practice tests will help you pace yourself.

When and How Will I Receive My Score Report and What Will It Look Like?
On the score report release date you will receive an email notifying you that your score report is available in your account. This is only if you had provided your email address at the time of registration. Test scores are released within about six weeks of the test date.

Your score will be sent directly to the school district, college, or university you indicated when you registered. Your score will also be automatically sent electronically to the State Bureau of Educator Certification.

Can I Retake the Test?
You must wait 31 days after taking a test to retake a failed one. To do so, you will need to reregister and pay the retake fee.
