I bought this book for my Nook and I loved it.  It is a rich and wonderful story about a true heroine of history.
Hypatia is a woman who actually existed in Alexandria, Egypt, in 4th century C.E. She is famous in history as a
a mathematician and philosopher.  Historians have traditionally marked her death at the hands of a Christian
mob as the beginning of the dark ages.  Her father, Theon of Alexandria is also famous in history and was the
head of the Library of Alexandria, which was burned by a Christian mob.   All this is told in this thrilling account of this extraordinary woman.  I don't know what the another reviewer says the book is "the wong book."  Weird.

This book broke my heart.  I'd read Longfellow's The Secret Magd

This book broke my heart.  I'd read Longfellow's The Secret Magdalene and didn't think she could ever write something as wonderful.  But she could.  Flow Down Like Silver is historical fiction, meaning Longfellow wrote of a real woman about whom little is known.  The little is enough for an amazing book of incredible richness.  I was enthralled.  I couldn't do anything but read it.  At work, all I wanted was to get back to it.  The history of Hypatia's world is here.  The splitting of the Roman Empire into two empires, the creation of the Christian Church, the beginning of bishops and popes (every large city had a pope) and the slow death of a world of magic and mysticism, of philosophy and questioning.  The iron fist of dogma took control of Hypatia's life.  Her life should be know to everyone.  A genius, a woman who questioned everything, a philosopher and a mathematician famous all over the Roman Empire, beacon of reason in a darkening world, a fair voice in a world of shrill righteousness, a beauty standing alone against a Terrified New World.  And the ending.  I didn't think I could bear it.  That's when my heart got broken.  The end of a life and the end of a book I loved.
