Flower Drum Song (Original London Cast)

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide
Rodgers and Hammerstein return to a theme that had served them well in both The King and I and South Pacific: misunderstanding and reconciliation between individuals of differing cultural backgrounds. This 1958 musical revolved around the meeting of old and new worlds in San Francisco's Chinatown. Flower Drum Song has a serviceable score but is not the team's most exciting. The novelty "I Enjoy Being a Girl" is more often excerpted than the lovely and overlooked "Love Look Away." The London cast opened in 1960 and ran for less than 500 performances, but was still a moderate hit and was well-received. A nice recording of a fine score. ~ Marjorie Ellen Ruhlmann and Sarah Erlewine
