Meet the Author

V. C. Andrews
V. C. Andrews

One of the most popular authors of all time, V.C. Andrews has been a bestselling phenomenon since the publication of the spellbinding classic Flowers in the Attic. That blockbuster novel began the renowned Dollanganger family saga, which includes Petals on the Wind, If There Be Thorns, Seeds of Yesterday, and Garden of Shadows. Since then, readers have been captivated by more than sixty novels in nearly twenty bestselling series. V.C. Andrews’s novels have sold more than 106 million copies and have been translated into twenty-two foreign languages.

Biography

"The face of fear I display in my novels is not the pale specter from the sunken grave, nor is it the thing that goes bump in the night," V. C. Andrews once told Douglas E. Winter. "Mine are the deep-seated fears established when we are children, and they never quite go away: the fear of being helpless, the fear of being trapped, the fear of being out of control."

Andrews's novel Flowers in the Attic launched the popular genre sometimes dubbed "children in jeopardy" -- stories about young people abused, lied to, and preyed upon by their evil guardians. The author's own childhood was not nearly so lurid, though it did have an element of tragedy: As a teenager she had a bad fall, which resulted in the development of bone spurs. A botched surgery, combined with arthritis, forced her to use a wheelchair or crutches for the rest of her life.

Andrews lived with her mother and worked as a commercial artist until the 1970s, when she began to write in earnest. Most of her early stories and novels went unpublished (one exception was "I Slept with My Uncle on My Wedding Night," which appeared in a pulp confession magazine). Finally, in 1979, Flowers in the Attic made it into print. The book soared to No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list and was followed by two equally successful sequels, Petals on the Wind and If There Be Thorns. Critics weren't always kind -- a Washington Post reviewer wrote that Flowers in the Attic "may well be the worst book I have ever read" -- but that didn't matter to millions of Andrews's readers, who devoured her gruesome fairy tales as fast as she could pen them.

As E. D. Huntley points out in V. C. Andrews: A Critical Companion, Andrews's novels fit neatly into the "female Gothic" tradition, in which an innocent young woman is trapped in an isolated mansion and persecuted by a villain. Andrews's own contribution was to take some of the themes implicit in early Gothic novels -- incest, sexual jealousy, and obsession -- and make them sensationally explicit in her works.

As most of her fans know by now, V. C. Andrews died in 1986, but new V. C. Andrews books keep popping up on the bestseller lists. That's because the Andrews estate hired a ghost writer, Andrew Neiderman, to continue writing books in the late author's style. Andrews's heirs have been cagey about just how much unfinished work she left behind when she died, but testimony during a 1993 tax case suggested that Andrews had only completed a portion of Garden of Shadows, the eighth book (out of more than 50) published under her name.

Still, even if the vast majority of "V. C. Andrews" books weren't actually written by V. C. Andrews, many of her fans are happy to have her tradition carried on. Neiderman has drawn on Andrews's novels, notebooks, and drawings for inspiration. "Don't make this sound weird," he once said in a Washington Post interview, "but sometimes I do feel possessed." To the original V. C. Andrews, who believed in precognition and reincarnation, it probably wouldn't sound weird at all.

Good To Know

Andrews wrote nine novels before Flowers in the Attic, including a science fantasy titled The Gods of the Green Mountain. Later, when she was a bestselling novelist, she wanted to try her hand at different kinds of fiction, but her publisher discouraged her. "I am supposed to stay in this niche, whatever it is, because there is so much money in it," she told Douglas Winter. "I mean, I have tapped a gold mine and they don't want to let go of it. I don't like that, because I want to branch out."

Though V. C. Andrews went by the name Virginia, her birth name was Cleo Virginia Andrews, not Virginia Cleo Andrews. She had planned to publish her books under the name Virginia Andrews, but her first publisher printed Flowers in the Atticas the work of "V. C. Andrews" in hopes that the gender-neutral name would make the book appealing to male readers.

    Wow!! Great book!

I got this book quite a while ago, and I am reading it as slow as I can. This book is so chilling, yet so addicting! I couldn't stop reading it!

A kind of novel where you despise the main character

This novel follows the story of four siblings, the main character being the second oldest, by the name of Cathy, born into a very rich family, with a loving mother and father. When the family is struck by the tragic death of their father, the mother, desperate to return to her rich, trouble-free life, moves in with her own detested mother and ill father, in the hopes of winning her father's favor and becoming the heir to his fortune. In doing this, she hides away her four children into an attic within the parents' mansion, on behalf that the father disapproved of her marriage, and would perhaps put to end their chances of inheritance, continuously insuring the children that any day the sick grandfather would meet his end.

Throughout the story, Cathy and her brother, the eldest of the siblings, develop a strange, and not a little creepy, relationship, and an obsessive one, at that. As the children grow, Cathy becomes obsessive upon the idea of vengeance, (the reason I am incapable of recording in the case that the reader yet wishes to read this novel) unrealistic, and unconvincing. In her hatred, she incessantly describes the blame that she puts forth upon her enemies, in that it was 'their' fault for all of the faults in her life, when, quite honestly, they were all her own. The main character also becomes a racy figure, throwing herself upon every man that she encounters (goodness knows you can't love that many people!), and also (I'm not lying on this) blaming her enemies yet again for her behavior. Not the best novel, unrealistic, in all, and poor in writing style, in the case that V.C. Andrews continuously over-explains certain aspects, so as the reader is incapable of making their own assumptions, bestowing a sense of bland predictability upon the reader. I, personally, would not recommend it, although it be the reader's right and entitlement to form their own opinions.

    Could not put it down

This dual book was sensational! I vaguely remember "Flowers" from when I was in Jr High. I never finished the series then, not really sure why. Glad I chose to re-purchase this series! The "Flowers" & "Petals" were so good I found myself thinking about the characters and what would happen next as soon as I stopped reading. It took me less than a week for both books and I am not a fast reader. The torment Chris & Cathy dealt with was horrid and tragic. Their suffering continued into the second book. I do not want to give away anything else for fear I will spoil it for someone else. Happy reading!!

These books are very good, and it's hard to put down. I just felt very depressed after I was done with the series, so I recommend a light, easy to read book after this.

    Highly Recommend this!

I'm a 14 year-old girl and I absolutely LOVE this book. I just finished Flowers in the Attic, and have just started on Petals in the Wind. I had seen the movie a few years ago so I knew it was a great story, but I had absolutely no idea it would be THIS good!!! I just can't put it down! It took me just four days to finish Flowers in the Attic, and I enjoyed it so much! While some people have said they feel that the brother-sister relationship was strange, and have also voiced other complaints, I feel that this book is pure genius and every detail in the book, like the relationship between Cathy and Chris, was added for pure entertainment and to help move the story along.

Highly Recommended to someone that loves a thrill.

Flowers in the Attic/ Petals in the Wind is a story about a family that somewhat falls apart after the death of a loving husband/father. The mother turns to her parents for help. From the beginning everything seems to be a good plan. But after arriving to find out that the children have to be hidden away in the attic while their mother earns her father's trust back is eye opening. The four of them: Cathy, Chris, Cory, and Carrie all teach themselves from old textbooks in the attic, which they transformed from a dark scary room into their piece of nature inside. The children have harsh rules to follow, most based on extreme Christian values. The two older children, Cathy and Chris, do their best to take care of the younger twins. They become parents to them as they realize that they will be stuck away for longer than expected. Their grandmother, a cruel woman, has secret actions against the children which causes a traumatic experience that forces the children to flee. They are taken in by a doctor in a small town, where they live comfortably. As they age, Cathy, becomes obsessed with revenge. By this point you will not be able to set the book down, the story is so enticing. She carefully plans to make them all pay for what happened. Her plan unfolds as she plays with the emotions of her mother's new husband, Malcom Foxworth. She toys with him, tempting him to sleep with her and to leave his wife. She becomes pregnant and decides that this is the perfect time to strike. When she shows up at a party one night, as the final point in her revenge plot, things take a turn for the worse. She takes out her anger on her grandmother, destroying her mother's emotions as well as Malcolm's. There is an accident and the house catches fire, killing someone (Read to find out who!). The story leaves the reader amazed at how far these children have come and how the horrible experiences effected each of them. I would recommend this book to people that like thrilling and romantic stories. The book seems like it would take a long time, but a good story makes the time fly by!

    AWESOME

I thought this book was amazing I finished both of them in four days, although the romance was kind of strange I did feel extremely bad for Chris, not to spoil anything but if your looking for something that will pass the time i would definitely read this book. I would recommend it to anyone who likes creepy romances and what we would do for money.

    A MUST READ!!!!! :)

i had my doubts about reading this book.... my friend recommened it to me .. she could barely put the book down... when i first started reading the book i have to say it didn't intrigue me as much as I wated it to. Although later on I started loving the book and getting more addicted. The characters can have you hating them in one in minute and then loving the next. You go through this journey it Cathy,Christopher,Cory, and Carrie as if you were one of the children in the attic. Flowers in the Attic and Petals in the Wind tell you about the four little flowers that were trapped in a attic for the reason that the only person they depended on,their mother was blinded by money and fortune. It tells the tale of how when the flowers are deprived their perspective of life changes completely and how they have no one else to depend on but themselves.

    Didn't Meet Expectations.

I found out about this book and the plot really intrigued me, I couldn't wait to read it. When I did start reading it, I was disappointed. The writing was just average, nothing spectacular. The plot was good, but there were some loopholes, I still don't really understand why their mother never let them out of the attic after she got money. When I read the plot summary, I didn't think the incest aspect of it would bother me, but it kind of did after a while. Over all, the plot of this book is good but a little depressing, and I found it hard to finish.
