Description: Updating the 2006 edition, this book reviews the physiology and clinical chemistry that encompasses the important fields of fluid therapy, electrolytes, and acid-base balance in small animal veterinary medicine.
Purpose: As our understanding of small animal veterinary clinical medicine changes daily, the book sufficiently provides an updated, nearly comprehensive book on fluid therapy, electrolytes, and acid-base along with many of their associated disorders. It also succeeds in providing a strong amount of physiological and biochemical background essential to understanding the various processes.
Audience: The complex content of the book makes it an excellent read for small animal residents and specialists, whether in internal medicine, anesthesia, or emergency/critical care. More advanced general practitioners also may find this book beneficial, but the level of content is likely too difficult for veterinary students.
Features: The book deftly covers mechanisms/causes of acid-base, electrolyte, and fluid disturbances, while nicely reviewing both body fluid and renal physiology. It also covers numerous situations during fluid therapy in small animal practice and how to appropriately approach each case. The amount of physiology and physical chemistry in this book make it stand out among veterinary textbooks that often lack pathophysiologic explanations of the diseases they strive to teach about. Many figures, images, and tables help enhance readers' understanding of the material and provide nice summations of differential diagnoses. One small drawback to the figures is that some are not adequately labeled or are grossly mislabeled, which can cause confusion. Although the authors do note that all equations, values, etc., should be double-checked before being used, there are still obvious typos in a few equations that can also hamper understanding of the material.
Assessment: This is an exceptional, advanced textbook for the veterinary medical field appropriately updated from the previous edition. It is truly one of a kind and any resident/specialist in the field of small animal medicine should own a copy.
