Johnson, a chemist, retired from the industry in 1992, the same year he published the first edition of this practical guide; he becomes somewhat confusing about when the second edition came out. He concentrates on the final, sterilizing, filtration of a pharmaceutical liquid just before the operation of filling vials or bottles, but he also takes account of the previous stages of filtration with ordinary fibrous filter media to remove particles. He discusses the flow of liquid and gas through the filter media, characterizing filter media using fluid intrusion measurements, describing filtration efficiency, different views of filtration, cross-flow filtration, and the capacity of a filter medium in constant-flow filtration.
