Overview

The only novel based on the popular movie, now reissued in the Newmarket Medallion format (ages 10 and up), this soaring adventure about a father and his 13-year-old daughter who "teach" a gaggle of orphaned geese how to fly. Based on a true story, this inspirational coming-of-age tale by award-winning author Patricia Hermes is a favorite of pre-teens and teens. When 13-year-old Amy Alden reunites with her estranged father after the sudden death of her mother, the transition is not easy, especially since he's an eccentric inventor living on a remote farm in Canada. Everything changes, however, when Amy discovers a nest of goose eggs and brings them home to hatch. The newborns "imprint" on Amy, following her everywhere and claiming her as their mother. As they grow, Amy and her dad, Thomas, realize they must take on the responsibility of teaching them to migrate for the winter. From Canada to North Carolina, father, daughter, and geese all learn to fly together. Fly Away Home, the novel, was based on the movie starring Anna Paquin and directed by Carroll Ballard (Black Stallion, Never Cry Wolf). The book includes a special 16-page afterword on the making of the film and the real people behind the story, including "Father Goose" Bill Lishman.

Author Biography: Patricia Hermes has been awarded the American Library Association Best Book award, the School Library Journal Best Book award, and many Children's Choice awards. Her books include Kevin Corbett Eats Flies; Heads, I Win; and The Cousin's Club series.

    Bond Between Humans and Geese

This is a great story and yes it is based on a true story.Bill Lishmen has an organization called Operation Migration in Canada where he teaches canada geese a new migration route with an an ultralight plane. He now teaches the endangered species the whooping crane to migrate as part of his project. There is nothing fake about flying with the geese in an ultralight plane, actually, they would fly along with you in you were on a 4 wheeler or something that goes atleast 45 mph and wont injure or scare them.I raise Canada geese and enjoy having them fly along with me as i ride my 4 wheeler or bike and then lead them to a close by pond where they will spend the rest of their life with the other wild geese. It also shows the bond geese can have with their human owner and companion. If given alot of love and attention, geese can and will be the best pets, friends, and companions you'll ever had and may even one day saev your life as they are very good guard animals and would die for their owner. They also can live up to 40 years, a life long companion.Geese are man's best friend too.
