Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
A serviceable hero and plot propel this largely workmanlike thriller from Larsen (Stealing Trinity). Tough, uncompromising National Transportation Safety Board investigator Jammer Davis attempts to uncover the cause of a mysterious crash of the brand new CargoAir C-500, a flying-wing cargo plane operating under fly-by-wire technology. Meanwhile, a series of terrorist suicide attacks threatens oil facilities around the world. Jammer, aided by his semi-love interest, CIA agent Anna Sorensen, will stop at nothing as he bulls his way through bureaucratic obstruction, inept and corrupt officials, hired killers, and problems at home with his teenage daughter, Jenny. Eventually, he gets on the trail of a far larger plot involving a cabal of international businessmen out for economic gain. Larsen ties up all his loose ends nicely, and a nail-biter conclusion finally heats up the action. (Sept.)

    Highly Recommended

This is the first book I have read by this author and I had trouble putting it down. Not only does it hold your interest with its different twists and turns, but also gives a good insight into how plane crashes are investigated and why they can be so time consuming--without taking away from the story itself. The author manages to weave a lot of information right into the plot so that your interest is held all the way through.

    Airplane Crash Investigation Thriller

When a brand new C-500 crashes in France, Frank "Jammer" Davis is called in by the French government to help with the investigation. He has experience, having been a U. S. Air Force fighter pilot and has been part of the National Transportation Safety Board's investigations before. He is a no nonsense kind of guy but before he can really get a handle on what is going on, oil refineries throughout the world are attacked and governments are concerned about the situation and fears of oil shortages spread throughout the world. Is there a connection? Davis is a likable hero - the one who has a job to do and is not about to let anyone including government bureaucracy keep him from finding out why this plane crashed. Neither will another investigator, Anna Sorensen, who is a beautiful and smart woman. But Davis wonders if she is who she says she is and can she be trusted? Davis has a mission and is not about to be sidelined by a pretty girl. Other C-500s are still being flown and he wants to make sure there are no more tragedies. He needs to solve this mystery quickly but most be thorough. Being meticulous, Davis checks every detail, as the world situation intensifies. It all comes down to the recordings from the cabin - what is that click he is hearing? And are he and Sorensen in danger as they continue to ask questions? That will not stop them. Larsen has written other thrillers and Fly by Wire does not disappoint. He himself was an airline captain who flew in combat missions and also investigated in aircraft crashes. That kind of firsthand knowledge gives a real feel to the book. Larsen also moves the action from France to the White House to Switzerland and around the world seamlessly taking the reader along for an excited ride. I enjoyed this book and would love to see more of Jammer Davis in future thrillers.

    Bridget's Review

I love books that are about a major conspiracy and the main character puts their life on the line to set the record straight. I like to think that there are people like Frank keeping society in check. This book is full of suspense and delivers a thrill.

    an entertaining thriller.

The crash in France of the fly by wire technological Cargo Air C-500 stuns everyone. The most advanced freight carrier apparently plunged straight down from six miles up in the sky; the pilots died. With a fleet of over a hundred planes of this type, the French government wants the best investigation possible so they bring in the top gun, American National Transportation Safety Board accident investigator Frank "Jammer" Davis whose reputation is strict adherence to standard operating procedures especially when conducting an inquiry.

As he digs into the disaster, suicide bombers attack oil facilities around the globe; dramatically disrupting the flow and devastating the already shaken markets. In spite of corruption and bureaucratic blindness, Jammer begins to find the cause of the crash, but soon also links the failure to the terrorist incidents. He and girlfriend CIA agent Anna Sorensen try to uncover who is behind the effort to cause a Depression.

Tying the questionable recent moral behavior of the finance industry to the odious behavior of suicide bombers, Ward Larsen provides an exhilarating conspiracy thriller. The crash investigation is superb as Jammer provides the reader insight into how a plane disaster is analyzed while the action really heats up when the case spins into pure avaricious capitalism with the market correcting opponents and competitors. Although Jammer's issues back home with his teen daughter feels supercilious to make the hero seem human, that detracts from an entertaining thriller.
