Barnes & Noble - David McGee
Soaring creatively just as it's bound to skyrocket commercially, the Dixie Chicks' FLY is aptly dubbed. The songs center on the twin themes of being swept away by love and being swept out by love gone awry, and the Chicks, especially lead singer Natalie Maines, tell it like they've been there more than once. Gripping arrangements, impassioned musicianship from some of Nashville's finest, and more than a few surprises make FLY live up to the buzz. Check out "Don't Waste Your Heart," a traditional honky-tonk weeper by Maines and fellow Chick Emily Robison, in which the female protagonist warns her man that she -- not him -- is the faithless type. Or the breakneck "Sin ...

Or the breakneck "Sin Wagon," another Chicks' original, in which Maines dumps her inconsiderate beau and vows to do "a little mattress dancin'." Matraca Berg, Jim Lauderdale, and Dennis Linde pitch in with literate, big-hearted songs. The album ends on a provocative note, with Maines searing Patty Griffin's "Let Him Fly," while Robison and Martie Seidel harmonize softly behind her and Adam Steinberg summons a desolate ambiance with some evocative slide guitar. It's quite a journey, this FLY, and with it the Dixie Chicks demand to be taken seriously as artists by bringing music of substance as well as style back to the country mainstream.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Wide Open Spaces unveiled the new incarnation of the Dixie Chicks, revealing an eclectic, assured group that was simultaneously rootsy and utterly modern, but if that 1998 de facto debut captured the band just leaving the ground, Fly -- perhaps appropriately, given the title -- finds the group in full flight, in full possession of their talents. This time around, the different sounds they draw upon are more fully integrated, which only makes them more distinctive as a group. Even if the whole of the album feels more of a piece, they still take the time to deliver a slice of pure honky tonk on "Hello Mr. Heartache" and a piece of breakneck bluegrass on the rip-roaring, wickedly clever "Sin Wagon," which is also one of the group originals here, a collaboration between Natalie Maines and Emily Robison and outside writer Stephony Smith. It -- along with the Maines-cowritten "Without You," the Maines/Robison "Don't Waste Your Heart" and Martie Seidel's co-written "Ready to Run" and "Cowboy Take Me Away" -- showcase the trio's increasing craft as writers, which is one of the reasons this album sounds unified. But even the outside-written material feels like the group, whether it's the twangy boogie "Some Days You Gotta Dance," Patty Griffin's "Let Him Fly," the melancholy "Cold Day in July" and, especially "Goodbye Earl" where a wife gets revenge on her abusive husband. Like before, the group moves gracefully between these different styles, with Maines providing a powerful, compelling focus with Robison and Seidel offering sensitive support, and this blend makes Fly a rich, nuanced album that just gets better with repeated listens.

    A Sophomore Success

After the phenomenal success of Wide Open Spaces, I, like many others, anxiously awaited the Dixie Chicks follow-up. I was not disappointed. Fly is a great sophomore effort from the Chicks. I loved the upbeat songs on the CD, most notably "Ready to Run" and "Sin Wagon," which is one of the best country songs ever. And I loved how "Goodbye Earl" actually made killing someone humorous. However, the Dixie Chicks are equally adept on this CD with the ballads and "Heartbreak Town," "Cowboy Take Me Away," "Without You" and "Cold Day in July" are standouts on a CD filled with nary a bad song in the bunch. I can listen to this CD repeatedly and never tire of it.

I am so into girls standing up for themselves...

...I really loved this CD. I am a guy, but, you know, with that different lifestyle choice? Anyway, I want to leave a message on this sight for my secret crush, Eli Catton: My best friend.

Dixie Chics ''Fly'' cd is one of the best cd's out there.

Dixie Chics ''Fly'' cd is one of the best cd's out there. You just cant beat a cd that talks about love, life, and killing a wife beater! The lyrics appeal to a wide range of people. If you are feeling sad there are songs that you can relate to. If you are happy there are many songs that you can bob you head to. If you are mad there is a good many songs to help you vent your aggression. Plus the fact that it has sold over six million copies should make you go buy one pronto!

    college freshman in Georgia

I was a Dixie Chicks fan before they were superstars. Consequently, I was ecstatic when their Wide Open Spaces album became so popular. Like most other people I was anxiously waiting for their second album, FLY, to hit the shelves. Though I was by no means disappointed with the new album, I do not think it lives up to Wide Open Spaces. Even so...it is still a great album and I would recommend it to anyone. If you have to decide between Wide Open Spaces, and Fly, I suggest you go with Wide Open Spaces. It's going to be a classic.

    The Chicks are Soaring

''Fly,'' the second album released by the Chicks, is an amazing CD. Natalie, Emily, and Marty have displayed great talent vocally and musically. ''Fly'' has many upbeat songs about love gone wrong, but also includes several slow songs about falling in love. ''Sin Wagon,'' the latest single off the successful album, is a catchy song with a two-step beat that reveals the Chicks wild side on their way to heaven. However, the chicks also display great emotion in ''Cowboy Take Me Away.'' The lyrics range broadly from ''mattress dancin'' to ''closer to heaven above...'' Although the CD is labeled country, the racy lyrics and confidence of the Chicks will appeal to anyone that appreciates and loves music. This CD should be in your collection because it has a variety of songs that are emotional, wild, and overall fun.

    Dixie Chicks Fly High

The Dixie Chicks' newest CD FLY is amazing! It is much like the Wide Open Spaces CD, but it has a fresher, funkier beat. The new songs are imaginative and interesting and the overall CD is fun and upbeat. Fly is the perfect name for this piece of art. The song ''READY TO RUN'' is featured on the hit movie Runaway Bride. Another noteworthy song ''Earl'' was criticized for its violent content, but it is mearly making light of a serious situation. I applaude the Dixie Chicks for their latest efforts and recommend that you but the FLY CD if you like country music at all. The album is better than Wide Open Spaces and it always makes you feel good! Enjoy the CD and FLY high!

    Another Great Album!

Fly is a great album; all the songs are enjoyable instead of a select few. I just came from a long trip with a friend and we screamed the lyrics of this album all the way home. All the songs are fun to sing to. For example, Goodbye Earl is a great song to have fun with. We changed our voices and just sang along. Cowboy Take Me Away, another track on this CD is also an enjoyable song. As the songs goes, what could be better than laying ''on a pillow of blue bonnets and a blanket full of stars.'' Being romantic girls, my friend and I could definitely relate to it.

The Dixie Chicks have done it again!!

The newest album by the Dixie Chicks has topped the charts once again. It has the ability that not all albums have to keep you listening to every single song. Most people that buy this album don't have to skip over songs, and probably know almost every single word to every single song. The album covers more than one type of song from, ''Goodbye Earl,'' where the Chicks have an abused wife and her friend killing off an abusive husband, to ''Cowboy Take Me Away,'' where the girls sing about love. This is an excellent CD, and I can't wait for their next one to come out!
