Few instructional guides have much of a sense of audience. By contrast, as Gierach presents knowledge gained from a lifetime of experience as an angler, he displays has uncanny feel for the information fly fishers likely to read this book are looking for. He also has a fantastic sense ofhumor. The result is a book that makes the reader feel like a small stream expert before he/she has ever hit the water. Importantly, Gierach teaches anglers to respect the folklore, sensibility and tradition of fly fishing while generating a genuine enthusiasm in the reader for the possibilities of small stream angling. I've seen dozens of DVD/VHS and written fishing instructionals and this one succeeds where almost all of the others generally fail.

outstanding book. I have been fishing small streams in Colorado's backcountry for over four years now and have to say that John puts fishing into a perspective that everyone can understand. There is nothing like the solitude and reward you get when you hook a fine wild trout out of some of the best streams in the river. Keep up the good work John!

I have been fly fishing for three years, and a lot of this sport involves gathering information. I can honestly say that I will read this book again, both for the vast amount of well-presented information, and the touch of humor that makes all the difference.
