Editorial Reviews

Dennis Bitton
Gary LaFontaine sat down and grilled Mike Lawson about fishing the Henry's Fork a few years ago. It resulted in an audio tape called Fly Fishing the Henry's Fork. Now there's a book out by the same title, published by Greycliff, which LaFontaine owns. Gary says he remembers wanting to write down notes when he interviewed Lawson, and it occured to him that others might have the same itch, and that all fly fishers who seek information like to be able to look at it now and then, so.... It took some rearranging to create a printed book from a purposely informal interview, but La Fontaine and Greycliff did a good job. When he accepted his Man of the Year award at this year's FFF Fly Fishing show in Livingston, Mont., Gary let people know that although the Lou Gehrig's disease he's battling has limited his fishing time, it has increased his writing/editing time, for which he was grateful. If this simple little 148-page paperback (second in the Greycliff River Book Series) is any indication of the productivity provided by his non-voluntary sedentariness, we can all be grateful. This book's only value is that it tells you all you need to know about the Henry's Fork. If that's not important to you, don't spend the $14.95

Seth Norman
The more frequently I encounter weighty tomes, the more likely I am to appreciate little books, small portraits, works with beginnings I can still remember when I reach the end.

Mike Lawson was raised on the Henry's Fork and makes his life there. He knows the beasts and seasons, the shapes and colors of the land; he speaks of the river with the kind of familiarity and easy affection one might have for a brother who never moved far away. "Speaks" is the right choice of verbs here: Fly Fishing the Henry's Fork started out as an interview between authors Mike Lawson and Gary LaFontaine, with off-mike kibitzing and editing from publisher Stan Bradshaw. It's to Bradshaw's credit , LaFontaine suggests in the Preface, that I wouldn't have guessed the book's origin-"adapted from the audio tape, with a sound reach by..." It does not have a cobbled together feel, nor does the committee approach obscure what sounds like a single voice-Lawson's-that even comes with a sense of humor: "Back in my guiding days my clients used to think I had the eyes of an eagle. I would walk them into the Ranch and approach an area where I knew there were always big trout. When I was a hundred yards away I'd tell them I had spotted a big trout sipping softly in the current. I'd give them my binoculars and sure enough they could see a huge feeding trout. They just couldn't believe that...I would never reveal that I knew the trout would be there before I ever saw it. It really helps to know a river like the Henry's Fork."

It does-that river, and the others described, of which there are several, including tributaries, and descriptions of lakes the Henry's Fork makes.
