Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
Fly Guy, that cute fly with an unending curiosity and lots of opinions, is back. He is at the aquarium with his friend Buzz, who wants to see the sharks. Fly Guy is not so sure; “Sharks are scary!” But Buzz disagrees: “Sharks are cool!” he says, so the two set off to learn all about sharks. They learn that about four hundred shark species exist and they have been on earth for over four hundred billion years. Buzz and Fly Guy see pictures of several sharks, a drawing of a prehistoric shark, plus a prehistoric shark’s tooth, almost as big as a hand, and an up-close view of a bull shark’s gills. As Fly Guy and Buzz proceed through the aquarium, they see what sharks and other fish have in common and, more exciting, what they do not. Instead of bones, sharks have cartilage; and instead of scales, they have very rough skin covered with specialized scales called denticles. And how about those teeth! Sharks have brains just like humans and flies and they are smart. Their senses are amazing, with some sharks able to hear other fish’s muscles moving as they swim and others can see their prey in murky water or even in the dark. Most sharks have a remarkable sense of smell. After learning about shark reproduction and longevity (Some live up to about twenty-five years. “That’s way longer than the life of a fly!”), Buzz and Fly Guy leave the aquarium much more informed. Even better, Fly Guy is not afraid of sharks any more. “They are so cool!” says Fly Guy. Fly Guy may be a good way of introducing pre- and early readers to the remarkable, rather than the scary, aspects of sharks. Reviewer: Judy Crowder; Ages 5 to 8.
Kirkus Reviews
Buzz and his buzzy buddy open a spinoff series of nonfiction early readers with an aquarium visit. Buzz: "Like other fish, sharks breathe through gills." Fly Guy: "GILLZZ." Thus do the two pop-eyed cartoon tour guides squire readers past a plethora of cramped but carefully labeled color photos depicting dozens of kinds of sharks in watery settings, along with close-ups of skin, teeth and other anatomical features. In the bite-sized blocks of narrative text, challenging vocabulary words like "carnivores" and "luminescence" come with pronunciation guides and lucid in-context definitions. Despite all the flashes of dentifrice and references to prey and smelling blood in the water, there is no actual gore or chowing down on display. Sharks are "so cool!" proclaims Buzz at last, striding out of the gift shop. "I can't wait for our next field trip!" (That will be Fly Guy Presents: Space, scheduled for September 2013.) A first-rate sharkfest, unusually nutritious for all its brevity. (Informational easy reader. 5-7)
