Children's Literature - Amy McMillan
The much-loved Fly Guy is starring in his own line of nonfiction early readers. In this volume Fly Guy and Buzz act as tour guides for the Natural History Museum, where the reader is introduced to a basic history of the earth and to the reign of the dinosaurs. The illustrations are a mix of photographs showing paleontologists at work, museum artifacts, and artist renderings of various dinosaurs, layered with drawings of Buzz and Fly Guy. Despite having many of the most difficult words followed by a pronunciation key it could have been even better served with some back matter: a glossary or additional reading. Be aware that the publisher’s label indicates the book falls into a K-2 interest level and a 2nd grade reading level which is much higher than most of the Fly Guy stories and may discourage a reader or two who hope to be able to read it independently. But overall it is a great introduction to new vocabulary and concepts—in a fun way with familiar characters. Reviewer: Amy McMillan; Ages 4 to 8.
