Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Police officers and firefighters are popular figures in children’s books. This early reader has the familiar team of Buzz and his buddy Fly Guy heading off to the fire station. Fly Guy was a bit apprehensive but Buzz assured him that there are no fires where they are headed, just firefighters and fire trucks. In the Rescue Center, the chief or another firefighter determines what the emergency is and where it is located. The fire fighters rush to their truck and are on their way. The trucks are always ready to go, with all of the equipment that the firefighters will need. A fully dressed firefighter with a helmet, mask, oxygen tank, fireproof suit and waterproof boots ends up carrying a load of about 50 pounds. Firefighters have to be in excellent physical shape to handle their jobs. Some trucks carry water, which may soon be exhausted, so the firefighters connect their hoses to fire hydrants. Some firefighters are also EMTs so they can help people who are hurt or injured. For those living in high-rise buildings, there are fire trucks with ladders that can extend 100 feet. In addition to trucks, there are fire-rescue boats and helicopters. Some fire stations have rescue dogs to help find people trapped or injured in a fire. Arnold has developed his character Buzz, with bulging eyes and an almost square body with stick-like legs, into a character who, with his fly companion, can go on field trips just about anywhere. The cartoon-like characters are superimposed on pictures of real people so young readers can glean a lot of information from the images. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot; Ages 5 to 7.
