Overview

A photographer's reference library in a single volume, The Focal Encyclopedia of Photography, Third Edition, covers the field from the earliest beginnings of photography to the advanced technologies of the 90s. It is an indispensable, one-of-a-kind working tool for the amateur and professional photographer alike. This comprehensive work reflects the dramatic changes in photographic technology over the last two decades. With over 150 years of photography condensed into a single, comprehensive volume, this new encyclopedia covers traditional and time-honored materials and processes together with electronic imaging and other developments of the 90s. Expertly organized and edited by Leslie Stroebel and Richard Zakia, distinguished faculty members of the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences of the Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York, this edition promises to be the definitive reference work for photographers worldwide. It is a "must have" tool, as timeless as a book on photography can be. Dr. Stroebel and Dr. Zakia have multiple books to their credit, including Photographic Materials and Processes, Basic Photographic Materials and Processes, View Camera Technique, 6th edition, as well as numerous other titles. Both are graduates of RIT and the University of Rochester. Dr. Stroebel is former chairman of the Imaging and Photographic Technology Department and Dr. Zakia is former chairman of the Fine Art Photography Department and the MFA Program in Imaging Arts. The 90 contributors selected by the editors represent an international team of experts in all areas of photography and related disciplines.

Editorial Reviews

Booknews
**** Previous editions (1960, 1969) and/or versions (the original two-volume edition was last published in 1965) of this authoritative technical reference for photographers are cited in BCL3, Sheehy, and Walford. The present edition updates material from the previous edition that is still relevant and includes numerous new topics related to changes and advances in the field of photography during the intervening years (the extent of the change is evidenced by the fact that only about a quarter of the terms in this edition appeared in the preceding edition) through to electronic imaging and other developments of the 1990s. The editors are faculty members of the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences of the Rochester Institute of Technology. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
