Meet the Author


Constance Staley is a Professor of Communication at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, where she has taught for 35 years and directed the Freshman Seminar Program for seventeen years. An award-winning teacher, Dr. Staley is the author of a multimedia training package for first-year seminar instructors, as well as the ground-breaking resource manual 50 WAYS TO LEAVE YOUR LECTERN. Staley is a well-known name in FYE circles, and she is a leader in instructor workshop training. During a three-year leave from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, Dr. Staley joined an East Coast Fortune 500 company to design and deliver its management and supervisory training. She also represented the university as a Fulbright Scholar, teaching in the former Soviet Union from 1995 to 1996. Dr. Staley received her B.A. from Ball State University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

After graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy and flying for six years, Dr. Staley earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in English from the University of Colorado. Joining the faculty of the Air Force Academy, he directed and taught courses in writing, speech, organizational communication, and literature. He also helped develop the renowned Air Force Executive Writing Course, visiting government and corporate headquarters for twelve years to model clear, powerful communication. As Assistant Dean of Faculty and Professor of English, Dr. Staley administered the Academy's successful Rhodes Scholarship program, served as president of the Tenure Council, directed faculty development, developed the First Year Seminar "Interdisciplinary Education at the Academy" (IDEA) program, and originated a critically acclaimed course in "Physics and Literature." In 1988 he joined the faculty of the Naval War College as Professor of Strategy and Policy, where he also served as a Research Fellow for the United Nations International Peace Academy. During this time he authored The Wave of the Future: The United Nations and Naval Peacekeeping, and with Dr. Constance Staley co-authored Communicating in Business and the Professions: The Inside Word. As Director of Advising at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Dr. Staley helped develop the school's new Freshman Seminar program, and spent the 1995-96 academic year as a Fulbright Fellow teaching and administering at the Kyrgyz-American University in Kyrgyzstan.
