Overview

Ireland explores the history, culture, and people of the island nation that broke away from Great Britain in 1921. After having shaken off the rule of the Vikings in the eleventh century, Ireland was dominated by the British until the early twentieth century. The country's independence was dramatic, with the region of Northern Ireland remaining to this day under British rule. At about the time the controversy and conflict over Northern Ireland began to die down, Ireland became part of the European Economic Community (later the European Union) and began its dramatic transformation into one of the most prosperous economies in Europe. Ireland's major challenge today is maintaining the quality of its economy as the European Union is poised to expand yet again. As Ireland's role in the European Union changes, the country hopes to maintain its prosperity and its distinctive culture.
