Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Della A. Yannuzzi
Thompson's book about a career in fitness is yet another in a series called "On the Job." The basics of building a career as a personal trainer are explored. Some topics covered are basic fitness tests, sports nutrition, coaching tips, understanding the body and much more. The section on personal trainer studies includes information on food science, human anatomy, physiology, biology and chemistry. Typical training skills mentioned are body composition, flexibility, endurance and strength. Other sports career options include sports medicine, exercise physiologist and manager. A timetable of a typical day for a personal trainer is given. The day begins at 6:30 a.m. and doesn't end until 7:00 p.m. Sidebars, illustrations and photographs highlight the text. Some interesting sidebars are facts about muscles, typical training goals and a body-type chart. Although many of the careers in the "On the Job" series are exciting and appealing, hard work, determination and dedication aren't overlooked. A realistic picture of the career is presented with facts and information. Back cover material includes further reading, websites and a glossary of terms. Focusing on Fitness does the job of offering a quick look at an interesting career. Reviewer: Della A. Yannuzzi
