Make Your Way - The Bible of Italy

This book was the Bible of our recent trip to Italy. We planned our vacation around the information therein, and we often relied on it for the pertinent facts about the site/city we were visiting. It is quite comprehensive in terms of covering all the major regions and cities of Italy, but it can be somewhat lacking if you are looking for supplemental tour information about specific cities or historical sites, although any guide with all that information would be 100 times the size of this one. The maps of the major cities were instrumental to us. The book itself is rather heavy if you're planning on carrying it around as we did, but it certainly helped us to find specific locations when the locals failed to understand our weak Italian. The directions to certain places in this book can be kind of dicey, so I would definitely recommend an investment in a GPS program, especially since the road markings are often difficult to discern--don't rely on this to get you to an exact address, just in the general vicinity. All in all, however, this guide provided a great means of really digging into Italy and determining what we had the time/money/energy/interest to do. The top picks in the major metropolitan areas are great. If you're planning a trip and you want to hit the highlights as a first timer, this is definitely the book for you.
